2016 Global NCAP test – 5 Indian cars fail

UK based Global NCAP has released the latest crash test results of Indian cars, or rather made-for-India cars, where Hyundai Eon, Maruti Eeco, Maruti Celerio, Mahindra Scorpio and Renault Kwid all of them have got zero out of 5 star rating for adult occupant protection.

The test was done at a speed of 64 km/h and the variants have been listed below.

1 – Hyundai Eon with no airbags
Hyundai Eon with no airbags scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

2 – Maruti Suzuki Eeco with no airbags
Maruti Suzuki Eeco with no airbags scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

3 – Maruti Suzuki Celerio with no airbags
Maruti Suzuki Celerio with no airbags scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 1/5 for child occupant protection.

4 – Mahindra Scorpio with no airbags
Mahindra’s Scorpio SUV with no airbags scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

5 – Renault Kwid with no airbags (until VIN No. MEEBBA005G1323780)
Renault’s successful hatchback Kwid with no airbags produced until VIN No. MEEBBA005G1323780 scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

6 – Renault Kwid with no airbags (Produced from January 2016, from VIN No. MEEBBA005G1323781) 
This variant of the Kwid produced from January 2016, from VIN No. MEEBBA005G1323781, with no airbags scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

7 – Renault Kwid with driver airbag 
With the optional driver airbag, Kwid scored 0/5 for adult occupant protection and 2/5 for child occupant protection.

Commenting on the results, David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP said – “The latest SaferCarsforIndia results show how important it is for cars to have a body shell that can remain stable in a crash. This is an absolutely crucial pre-requisite for occupant safety together with fitment at least of front airbags. It is very surprising that a manufacturer like Renault introduced the Kwid initially lacking this essential feature. Global NCAP strongly believes that no manufacturer anywhere in the world should be developing new models that are so clearly sub-standard. Carmakers must ensure that their new models pass the UN’s minimum crash test regulations, and support the use of an airbag.”
