Driven: Isuzu D-Max V-Cross

Isuzu D-Max V-Cross

So, we saw this at Auto Expo earlier this year. It’s not the first time India has been introduced a lifestyle pick-up truck. We’ve had the Tata Xenon and Scorpio Getaway.. there is a bolero camper as well. But this thing is huge. It’s the lengthiest among all the lifestyle pick-up trucks in India.

There’s a bit of resemblance to some Chevy SUVs both on the exterior and the interior that’s because GM has a partnership with ISUZU.

Build quality on the inside is good and all the touch points feel solid at this price point. There’s a decent amount of kit including power-adjustable and foldable mirrors, automatic AC, keyless entry, a multi-information display and a good amount of storage spaces.

The seats are comfortable and there’s loads of knee room, headroom and as one would expect, there’s lots of space on offer. But..what’s under the hood is what makes this a special lifestyle pick-up truck. The 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine makes 134 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. Now that might not sound like great numbers, but once you start driving it, you’ll realize this is one of the best diesel engines you’ve experienced in recent times. It’s not in the numbers, but how it delivers it.

The best part is, you don’t have to do too much of gear changes to stay in the powerband. And even in challenging terrains, you don’t have to change it to 4WD mode, 2WD does the job quite well. Gear throws and clutch travel are long but it’s okay for a truck of this type.

And the cabin is surprisingly well insulated, double-wishbone at the front and leaf spring at the rear does its job. Steering feel could have been a li’l better. Talking about the safety, there are ABS+EBD and dual airbags as standard. This car misses out on navigation and parking sensors or reversing camera. But that shouldn’t be much of a problem, as there are lots of aftermarket options.

The D-Max V-Cross is priced just a little above than its main rival which makes it an amazing package. Watch the video embedded above and let me know what do you think of the car in the comments down below, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel.
