While my car was going through formal security checks, i saw a strange badgeless hatchback waiting at my office entrance. It looked like some Datsun from where i stood, but when i drove past it, it became clear. It is a Perodua Axia. The car was spotted in Mumbai last year probably on a test, with a badge. Not sure if this is the same car.

Perodua is a Malaysian manufacturer, and the Axia is basically a rebadged version (badge engineered) of Daihatsu Ayla/Toyota Agya. Also, Toyota’s Daihatsu owns 25% stake in Perodua. The Axia sold in Malaysia packs a 1.0 litre petrol engine, producing 66 PS of power and 90 Nm of torque, mated to a 5 Speed manual transmission. There is a 4 Speed automatic as well.

The top of the line variant gets infotainment system, push button start, smart key, projector headlamps and fog lamps. The one pictured above didn’t had any of these, suggesting a mid variant. However, i did see airbag markings on the steering wheel and on the passenger side, which means, there is a possibility of dual front airbags and ABS + EBD as a standard equipment.

There were reports of Toyota planning to introduce its Daihatsu brand in India. So this badgeless hatchback could hit the Indian market as Daihatsu Ayla sometime soon.
