It literally means “Third Millennium” in Italian. The Terzo Millennio is Lamborghini’s vision of a future “electric super sports car”. The concept has been developed in association with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Lamborghini says, the Terzo Millennio goes through 4 pillars of development – Energy, Innovation in Materials, Powertrain & Vehicle Architecture, Sound & Emotion.

It’s all high tech, but let’s try to put it in simple words. In Terzo Millennio, the body itself becomes a battery. The idea is to develop the car’s body panels with carbon fibre nanotubes that store nano-charges or electricity, probably by sandwiching between inner and outer layers. The body panels will also have advanced supercapacitors which are claimed to preserve outstanding power density. Besides high performance and fast recharging, one of the goals is to achieve greatest kinetic energy recovery possible.

The project also aims to develop a health-monitoring technology to continuously monitor the whole carbon fibre structure, both visible and invisible, to detect cracks and damages that might occur after an accident. And in case of a crack, the carbon fibre structure can “heal” itself, reportedly. It’s all nanotechnology to save weight.

As for the powertrain, there’ll be an in-wheel electric motor at all four corners, forming an AWD and possibly torque vectoring too. While the electric sports car can’t make a naturally aspirated V12 sound, Lamborghini is “investigating” for a substitute.

While we all know that the future is electric in some way (HEVs, BEVs, FCEVs, don’t-know-what-else EVs), it doesn’t look like many expected Lamborghini to come up with an electric hypercar concept so soon. Nonetheless, it seems to be a good one.
