After a long wait, Ather Energy launched their electric scooters Ather 340 and Ather 450, priced at Rs 1,09,750 and Rs 1,24,750, on-road, respectively. The price is inclusive of FAME subsidy @ Rs 22,000, insurance, GST, road tax, smart card charges, and registration fee.
The 340 is powered by a 4.4 kW (6 hp) BLDC motor that has a torque of 20 Nm. Top speed is rated at 70 km/h. The 1.92 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack delivers an ARAI range of 86 km (estimated). The ‘TrueRange’ however, is 60 km with ‘Eco’ mode and if you switch it off, the range drops to 50 km.
The top-spec 450 on the other side is powered by a 5.4 kW (7.3 hp) BLDC motor with a torque of 20.5 Nm. This model can reach 80 km/h top speed. The 2.4 kWh Lithium-ion battery pack delivers an ARAI range of 107 km, and ‘TrueRange’ stands at 75 km with ‘Eco’ mode and 60 km when the mode turned off.
The battery pack is IP67 water and dust resistant and is enclosed in an aluminium case. As for the charging times, up to 80% of charge can be achieved at home in 2 hours and 40 minutes, and 100% charge takes 4 hours and 18 minutes. The company has already started ‘AtherGrid’ – charging points at several locations in Bengaluru which includes cafes, restaurants, offices and malls. At these AtherGrid points, the scooter can be fast charged to 80% at a rate of 1 km/minute.
Both models get a 7-inch touchscreen system that comes with navigation. There is also an app where the user can check charge status, push navigation to the vehicle, view ride patterns, live location tracking and so on. Other features include LED headlamp, LED tail lamp, LED indicators, disc brakes at both ends and combined braking system. Regenerative braking is present as well. The scooter gets firmware updates over-the-air.
The scooter also gets Reverse mode to glide out of tight parking spots with ease.
Currently, Ather is accepting orders only from Bengaluru for a refundable deposit of Rs 5,000. The company is also offering quarterly and annual subscription plans.
The ‘Ather One’ plan entitles customers to free public and home charging, regular maintenance inclusive of consumables, breakdown assistance and unlimited data services for the dashboard at Rs 700 + GST per month, which the company claims to be way lower than the sustenance cost of present scooters.
For the first set of consumers, Ather is offering the first year of the Ather One plan for free. The company will also provide a home charging Point with the Ather 450 and a charging cable with the Ather 340.
AtherSpace – an experience center in Indiranagar, Bengaluru will be open this week for test rides.
Tarun Mehta, co-founder & CEO – “We started building electric scooters five years ago at IIT Madras and we are excited to launch not only the Ather 340, but also our higher performance flagship variant, the Ather 450. It has been designed with quick acceleration, great handling, large storage space and new-to-category features like park assist, remote diagnostics, and onboard navigation. In the last five years we have not only built the scooter, but an ecosystem for an electric vehicle future. Be it the suppliers and partners who were entering the EV market, the charging infrastructure that had to be set up for consumers and the engineering talent itself to build the products. Between the Ather 450 & Ather 340 launching and AtherGrid being up and running in Bengaluru, we are really looking forward to expanding into Chennai & Pune in the coming months. These are exciting times to be a part of the industry.”
