After AMTs, we now have MATs (Manualized Automatics)

A manual sports car in 2026 may seem like a bizarre idea, but it’s not an impossibility. You might be surprised to know that there are still a bunch of ’em who offer a manual with proper three pedals, such as certain variants of the 911, the M2, the M4, the Toyota GR86 and its Subaru cousin, the Nissan Z, the Lotus Emira, and the Morgan Plus 4. Does that mean that the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale will also join this elite list, considering that it is limited to 1,499 units? Well, not really. Let me explain.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first, then, shall we? You see, the manual you’re seeing here is not an actual manual, but a “manual”. What that means is the 6.5L N/A V12 is coupled with the same Magna 8-speed DCT as usual, but the 12Cilindri Manuale offers a simulated 6-speed gated shifting experience. The simulation also includes a “clutch pedal” and “stalling”.

The so-called Manuale By-Wire system uses sensors and hydraulic actuators to offer a simulated manual shifting experience. It is essentially a fancier version of paddle shifting. Sounds familiar, right? Well, Koenigsegg did it first with the CC850. Also, in manual mode, the shift knob is backlit-illuminated in amber.

The rest of the car is more or less the same except for a few subtle visual differences. Notice the ‘Manuale’ branding on the fender, and the Ferrari shield on the side is laser-etched. Also, notice the pinstripe finish on the nose, which apparently is a subtle tribute to the 365 GTB4. For the exterior colors, buyers can choose from 25 colors, including the Rosso Rubino launch color. Exclusive forged alloy wheels are available in four finish options. For seats, Comfort and Racing versions are available, with of course, various material options. Every 12Cilindri Manuale will come with a ‘Tailor Made’ plaque inside – on the firewall – between the seats.

BMW has taken the wraps off the 5th-gen X5, which, in addition to traditional powertrains, will also be available as an all-electric model for the first time. Order books are open in Germany, with prices starting at €95,750 for the X5 40d xDrive (diesel mild-hybrid) and €99,750 for the X5 40 xDrive (petrol mild-hybrid). Orders for the remaining variants will commence from October 8, 2026.

The 5th-gen X5 adopts BMW’s Neue Klasse design language we’ve seen on the latest models such as the iX3, the i3, and most recently, the M Concept. But of course, there are specific differences, such as those “double-X” light signatures at the front and winglet-like electric door handles on the side. Optional M Performance parts are available as usual, including front splitter, high-gloss black roof spoiler, rear diffuser, and mirror caps. Up to 23-inch rims can be found in the options list.

As standard, the new X5 rides on the Adaptive Suspension, but of course, the Adaptive Chassis Control and the Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilisation can be found in the options list. The optionals will initially be available for BEV and PHEV models.

Although a new generation model, the 5th-gen X5 uses the previous-gen’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR), most likely with a few minor tweaks. The new model is slightly larger than the standard-wheelbase previous-gen X5. It measures 4,994 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,751 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,035 mm. A 53-litre frunk may not be all that usable, but the boot space measures up to 1,850 litres depending on the variant.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, the X5 40d xDrive packs a 3.0L straight-six turbo diesel coupled with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, offering 230 kW (313 metric hp) and 670 Nm (494 lb-ft). There’s also the X5 40 xDrive, packing a 3.0L straight-six turbo petrol coupled with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, offering 294 kW (400 metric hp) and 580 Nm (428 lb-ft). Transmission in both cases is an 8-speed ZF auto with xDrive AWD system.

Next up, we’ve the X5 50e xDrive, a PHEV, combining a 3.0L straight-six turbo petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed ZF auto. The combined figures are 360 kW (489 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). A 29.5 kWh battery pack is estimated to offer a pure electric range of up to 102 km (63 mi).

There’s also a more powerful PHEV called the X5 M60e xDrive, packing the same setup as the previous one. But the output figures here will be 450 kW (612 metric hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). The same 29.5 kWh battery pack is estimated to offer a pure electric range of up to 98 km (61 mi). Until the new X5 M arrives, this will be the most powerful and quickest one in the lineup, with an official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 4.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

For those who prefer all-electric, there’s the dual-motor iX5 60 xDrive, offering 425 kW (578 metric hp) and 805 Nm (594 lb-ft). A 141 kWh 800-volt battery pack is estimated to offer a range of anywhere between 645 and 845 km (401-525 mi). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.6 seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited to 210 km/h (130 mph).

Some of the key highlights inside include the BMW Panoramic Vision, a 3D Head-Up Display, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a 14.6-inch passenger display, and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with Amazon Alexa+ AI technology. Assistance systems include Park Assist with AI-supported parking space detection and manoeuvre planning.

2026 is the year of big changes, apparently, and the latest addition to this list is the first-ever BMW M2 M xDrive. Which means the popular rear-wheel-drive sports car is no longer exclusively rear-wheel-drive. Prices in Germany start at €81,300 (including VAT), which is €3,000 more than the regular M2.

Visually, the M2 M xDrive doesn’t look any different compared with the regular M2. It doesn’t even appear to carry an xDrive badge anywhere, probably in an attempt to be more discreet. However, the actual customer cars might carry one. The color palette includes a new Borusan Turkish Blue special paint option. As standard, the M2 M xDrive rides on M light-alloy wheels (19-inch at the front, 20-inch at the rear). Braking duties are handled by M Compound brakes with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston callipers at the rear.

Powering the M2 M xDrive is a 3.0L straight-six twin-turbo, pumping out 353 kW (480 metric hp) at around 6,250 rpm and 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) of torque between 2,200 and 5,600 rpm. The engine is coupled with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, and of course, the xDrive AWD system and the Active M Differential. There’s no manual transmission option here. Dry weight is claimed to be 1,865 kg (4,112 lbs), 50 kg (110 lbs) more than the regular M2 automatic. But thanks to the AWD system, the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds quicker than the regular M2 automatic and 0.5 seconds quicker than the regular M2 manual.

One of the key highlights here is that the xDrive system is rear-biased and switchable. In normal driving, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, and only when the system detects the need are the front wheels brought into play. The driver can manually select the 2WD (RWD) mode with DSC deactivated.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has entered its 6th generation, the W520, and interestingly or sadly (depending on your perspective), it’ll be available only with an all-electric powertrain. But don’t worry, the company hasn’t ditched ICE buyers altogether; the W206 will still be available to purchase, until further notice, of course. The W520 is expected to go on sale by the end of this year or early 2027.

The internet has some strong opinions on the new C-Class, of course, with some calling it downright ugly. But the general consensus is that people are unimpressed with the design. It remains to be seen if the design grows on people over time, just like it did with the M3 and M4 grilles. As you can probably tell, the design language is similar to that of the new GLC we saw last September, suggesting the design direction the new Mercs will be taking from now on.

Mercedes claims the new C-Class the sportiest C-Class ever, with a drag co-efficient of 0.22 Cd. Not sure who asked for it, but the illuminated grille features 1,050 individual illuminated dots you probably can use during festivals or celebrations. LED headlights come standard, but the ones shown here are the optional Digital Light headlights.

The standard comfort suspension comes with amplitude-selective damping. Options include 4.5‑degree rear-axle steering, Airmatic air suspension, and Sky Control panoramic glass roof with 162 illuminated stars.

As for the size, the new C-Class measures 4,883 mm long, 1,892 mm wide and 1,503 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,962 mm. Luggage capacity at the back is 470 litres, while the frunk offers an extra 101 litres of storage.

At launch, the W520 C-Class comes only in a single C 400 4Matic (AWD) variant. Which means there are two electric motors (PSM) producing combined peak figures of 360 kW (489 metric hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft). A 94 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is estimated to offer a range of anywhere between 592 and 762 km (368-473 mi), thanks to efficiency measures including a multi-source heat pump. The heat pump can use three energy sources in parallel: the waste heat from the electric drive, the battery and the ambient air. If you find a DC fast charger, the new C-Class can handle charging at speeds of up to 330 kW. The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.0 seconds, and the top speed appears to be limited to 210 km/h (130 mph). Kerb weight is 2,460 kg (5,423 lbs), which isn’t too bad at all.

Inside, key highlights include the optional 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen, AI assistance combining ChatGPT and Google Gemini, electric seats with lumbar support, massage, and ventilation, optional Burmester 4D Surround Sound System, and optional driver assistance systems including MB.Drive Assist with lane-change assistant that takes over lane changes at the touch of the indicator lever, and MB.Drive Assist Pro with point-to-point driving experience – even in heavy city traffic. Automatic reversing function is also available. Passive safety includes up to 11 airbags.

A post shared by BMW M Motorsport 🏆 (@bmwmmotorsport)

But the internet disagreed; the overwhelming response to that post suggested that the racing wagon should actually come into existence. And so, it did. The BMW M3 Touring 24H is not only now a real thing, but it’ll also compete in May at the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours in the SPX class.

The engineers at BMW M Motorsport apparently built this racing wagon in just 8 months. It shares the same technical base as the M4 GT3 EVO, but of course, with an M3 Touring body. The M3 Touring 24H is 200 mm longer and, including the rear wing, 32 mm higher than the M4 GT3 EVO. The technical data of both race cars are identical.

The P58 3.0L straight-six twin-turbo pumps out 434 kW (590 metric hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). A 6-speed Xtrac sequential gearbox drives the rear wheels. Below are a couple of M4 GT3 EVO images just to compare.

The BMW i3 nameplate has gone through quite a bit, hasn’t it? First, it was a 5-door supermini for nearly a decade, and then it was introduced as an electric version of the 3 Series for the Chinese market. Now, though, it has returned as a second Neue Klasse model, following the iX3 we saw last September. Production will commence in Munich in August 2026, followed by European sales in late September.

The i3 Sedan we’re seeing here is essentially the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse concept we saw in September 2023. Personally, I think it looks fairly clean and minimalistic, but for some, this so-called 2.5-box design may take a li’l longer to grow. The front fascia merges the kidney grille and headlights into a single unit, which I think can be a very polarising design decision for many. But either way, that’s the direction the new 3 Series is heading.

The example shown in the photos here is the i3 50 xDrive, which, as the name suggests, is a dual-motor AWD variant. Powered by the so-called Gen6 eDrive technology, i3 50 xDrive offers combined figures of up to 345 kW (469 metric hp) and 645 Nm (476 lb-ft). A 108.7 kWh battery pack is claimed to offer a WLTP range of up to 900 km (559 mi) on a single charge, but remember, this is a preliminary figure and not based on official WLTP data. But thanks to 800-volt architecture, the battery pack can be DC fast-charged with up to 400 kW. A 10-min fast charging is claimed to deliver a range of up to 400 km (248 mi).

Bi-directional charging, also known as V2L, is also possible. Which means your i3 can double as a giant power bank.

Inside, the narrow band of full-width display you see on the dashboard is the so-called BMW Panoramic Vision, which combines the gauge cluster as well. A 3D Head-Up Display is optionally available, which, of course, is an unnecessary option given the position of that Panoramic Vision. The options list also includes adaptive suspension, which adjusts itself to your individual driving style and road conditions.

There’s some interesting ambient lighting going on, to I guess compensate for a boring, soundless driving experience. But anyway, BMW is targeting to switch its entire portfolio to Neue Klasse BEVs in the coming years.

A few months ago, Bugatti introduced the Programme Solitaire, through which billionaires and car collectors can commission their one-off Bugatti. The first one under this programme was the Brouillard, a coupe version of the Mistral. Now we have the second one-off called the F.K.P. Hommage, which, as the name suggests, pays homage to Ferdinand Karl Piëch, and of course, the original Veyron.

The story of Veyron begins on a bullet train in Japan, where FKP sketched the revolutionary W engine that would eventually make its way into the Veyron in 2000. What’s more interesting is that the Veyron, originally called the Veyron 16.4, was developed from a 1999 concept called the 18/3 Chiron. The ‘3’ in the name indicates the 3rd Bugatti concept under VW ownership, while ’18’ indicates 18 cylinders. The 6.2L W18 was composed of three banks of six cylinders. But anyway, back to the Hommage car.

As with the Brouillard, the F.K.P. Hommage is also based on the Mistral. But I think the design team led by Frank Heyl has done a fantastic job of making the F.K.P. Hommage look like Veyron 2.0. From a distance, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference. I think Jozef Kabaň, the designer of the original Veyron, would approve of this Veyron 2.0. The wheels (20-inch front and 21-inch rear) look identical too, and are wrapped with the latest Michelin tires. The black bits on the body are actually exposed carbon fibre with a black-tinted clear coat.

The F.K.P. Hommage packs the Mistral’s 1,177 kW (1,600 metric hp) 8.0L quad-turbo W16. More specifically, it’s the same spec as in the Chiron Super Sport with larger turbochargers, enhanced intercoolers, upgraded cooling systems, and a reinforced gearbox.

Inside, it’s mostly identical to the Brouillard and the Mistral, except for the materials, colours and the artwork. One key difference is an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon, a 41mm timepiece, integrated on the centre stack – as requested by the owner of F.K.P. Hommage. The watch features a self-winding mechanism: a gondola that rotates on a diagonal axis several times per hour, powered by the car itself without electrical connection.

The Bugatti F.K.P. Hommage will be physically unveiled at the Rétromobile Paris event from January 29 to February 1 2026.

A mid-engined V8 manual RWD in 2026? Yes!

Nope, the Capricorn Group didn’t emerge recently out of a real-estate mogul’s boredom. You’ll be surprised to know that the Düsseldorf-based company’s clients include every big name in the automotive industry, including VW Group brands (Audi, Bugatti, Porsche), Toyota, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Ferrari, Ford, Renault, GM, and Stellantis brands. You see, these car manufacturers (most of them) don’t manufacture everything in-house. Many components are supplied by third-party manufacturers/contractors. The Capricorn Group is a key player in this space, supplying parts including but not limited to: intake manifolds, crankshafts, pistons, aero elements (diffusers, spoilers), gearbox mounts, door hinges, and more. The company specializes in lightweight and CFRP components.

It seems as though someone at Capricorn thought, “You know, we’ve been doing this for so long for others, I think it’s time we supplied it to ourselves”. And that, my friend, is probably how the Capricorn 01 Zagato was born. Strictly limited to 19 coupes, the Capricorn 01 Zagato carries a base price of €2.95 million (excluding taxes), and will be exclusively sold by the Louyet Group.

As the name suggests, the Capricorn 01 Zagato is designed by.. well, Zagato. The idea is to be minimalistic and not screamy. Therefore, you’ll not find ridiculously large wings, front spoilers, canards, fins, and whatnot. In fact, there are no active aerodynamic elements at all, which, depending on your perspective, may or may not be a good thing. But the idea is to keep the weight as low as possible, which means eliminating things that may be deemed not essential. The reason the mirrors are placed on the fenders as opposed to on the gullwing doors is to keep the doors as light as possible. But anyway, is it just me, or from the front-three-quarter angles, the Capricorn 01 gives off Ford GT vibes?

Capricorn-01-Zagato-chassis

The suspension setup comprises a double wishbone, pushrod system with an anti-roll bar and spring/damper units from Bilstein front and rear. The car rides on 21-inch wheels and offers a choice of lightweight alloy or carbon fibre. Most of the car is made of carbon fibre, with a little bit of titanium and aluminum components on the inside, resulting in the car weighing less than 1,200 kg (2,645.5 lbs).

The power source is a reworked Ford 5.2-litre supercharged V8. Bespoke modifications include a supercharger, dry sump lubrication system, rotating assembly (comprising crankshaft, conrods, and pistons), air intake, cooling system, and exhaust system. Capricorn also claims to have developed its own ECU and mapping software.

Capricorn-01-Zagato-interior

The output figures are estimated to be 662 kW (900 metric hp) and 1,000 Nm (737.5 lb-ft). Power is sent to the rear wheels via the CIMA 5-speed dog-leg manual transmission. The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is less than 3 seconds, and the top speed is 360 km/h (224 mph). Inside, the seats are fixed in place, but the steering column and pedal box are adjustable. Furthermore, the gear lever is longitudinally adjustable by 80 mm. Capricorn assures that the car is comfortable for everyone, as one of its lead engineers who is 6.6 ft tall, could sit comfortably. A 100-litre frunk should be fairly good if you fancy going on a road trip.

Replaces the EQC

Just like how the new BMW iX3 is not related to its ICE siblings, the new Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology (or simply, the electric GLC) is also not related to its ICE siblings. This is an all-electric model, built on the MB.EA platform. Initially, for European markets (in 2026), it’ll be offered in a sole GLC 400 4Matic variant. But there are reports of a less powerful GLC 300+ variant for other markets.

Not sure which dank-head came-up with the idea that a glowing grille looks “premium” or “cool”, everyone seems to be adopting that idea. The optional illuminated grille features a total of 942 polycarbonate backlit dots, which can be animated for additional cost. Digital Lights are an optional extra for those who don’t fancy the standard LED headlights. The basic silhouette of this electric GLC is similar to that of a regular GLC, but the front and rear fascias are where it tries to distinguish itself. Mercedes claims a drag co-efficient of 0.26 Cd.

The electric GLC is slightly larger than its ICE siblings. It measures 4,845 mm long, 1,913 mm wide and 1,644 mm tall. Wheelbase measures 2,972 mm. Luggage capacity is up to 1,740 litres, excluding the 128 litre frunk. Up to 21-inch light-alloy wheel options are available for buyers.

The GLC 400 4Matic is powered by two PSM electric motors: one at the front and one at the back, offering combined outputs of 360 kW (489 metric hp) and 808 Nm (596 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.3 seconds, while the top speed appears to be limited to 210 km/h (130 mph). A 94 kWh NMC battery pack is estimated to offer a WLTP range of up to 713 km (443 mi).

The Airmatic air suspension with intelligent suspension control and rear-axle steering are part of the optional technology package. The intelligent suspension control includes a new Car-to-X function. Car-to-X denotes communication between vehicles and with traffic infrastructure.

Inside, the entire dashboard is covered with the so-called MBUX Hyperscreen with a 39.1-inch real estate. But thankfully, it is an option. The electric GLC also claims to have the first-ever vegan-certified (Vegan Society) interior. There are no animal-derived products inside.

Optional driver assistance systems include MB.DRIVE ASSIST, MB.DRIVE ASSIST PLUS, MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST, and MB.DRIVE PARKING ASSIST 360.

That’s right; this is the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse X (concept) we saw earlier in 2024. Unsurprisingly, it’s the SUV that became the first series-production Neue Klasse model, despite the sedan Neue Klasse concept debuting months earlier. But anyway, the new BMW iX3 starts at €68,900 in Germany.

The production iX3 retains most of the design elements from the concept, including the shape of the lights, the retro small “grille”, the roof integrated rear wing, and the overall silhouette in general. The design may seem polarizing at first, but I’m pretty sure this will grow fairly quickly. Those glowing stuff on the grille is an optional extra (€1,060). BMW claims a drag co-efficient of 0.24 Cd.

Unlike the previous-gen iX3, this new model is not related to its ICE cousins. Meaning, it is not built on the CLAR platform. The new iX3 is built on the electric exclusive Neue Klasse platform.

It measures 4,782 mm long, 1,895 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall. The wheelbase of 2,897 mm should ensure generous space for all occupants and their luggage. Speaking of the luggage, the capacity is rated up to 1,750 litres, excluding the 58 litre frunk. The SUV rolls off the factory with 20-inch light-alloy wheels as standard, but there are options for up to 22-inches.

The new iX3 is available with a single variant for now, which is the iX3 50 xDrive. There are two motors, an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) at the rear and an asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front. Regadless, neither of ’em contain permanent magnets, which is a good thing. The combined output figures are 345 kW (469 metric hp) and 645 Nm (476 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.9 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 210 km/h (130 mph). Unladen DIN weight is 2,285 kg (5,038 lbs).

A 108.7 kWh (net) battery pack is estimated to offer a range of anywhere between 679 and 805 km (422-500 mi). The battery pack can handle DC fast-charging with up to 400 kW.

Key highlights inside include the so-called BMW Panoramic Vision display that stretches across the full width of the windscreen, a 17.9-inch central display, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, heated & electrically adjustable front seats, two-zone climate control (3-zone optional), optional 3D Head-Up Display, optional M Sport seats, optional M Sport steering wheel, and optional 13-speaker Harman Kardon HiFi system. Yes, that panoramic glass roof is also an option (€1,420).
