In another 10 years from now, every sports car/hypercar will most likely be all-electric, especially those from mainstream/established manufacturers. Which means the Chevy Corvette will also most likely go all-electric. But before that, GM wants to know the public opinion on this wild idea by showcasing three concepts this year. Following the Corvette Hypercar concept in March is the California Corvette concept we’re seeing here.
While the hypercar concept was designed by GM’s UK studio, the California concept is designed by—as the name suggests—the California studio. Neither of these concepts reminds us of the Corvettes we’ve known so far, but that’s probably the idea. I smell the usage of AI on this one, but the design looks rather busy compared with the concept we saw in March. The visor and the double-bubble roof give off Koenigsegg vibes. There’s an active spoiler at the back.
As for some quick specifications, the body panels are draped around a carbon fibre tub. The concept measures 4,669 mm long and 2,184 mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2,767 mm. Those complicated-looking wheels measure 21-inch at the front and 22-inch at the rear.
One of the key highlights of this concept is a removable single-piece, front-hinged canopy. While the exterior design doesn’t really remind us of the Corvette, the driver-focused cockpit is somewhat similar to that of the Corvette.
We don’t have the horsepower and torque figures for this concept, since GM has no immediate plans of putting this into production.
The California Corvette concept is another example of forward-thinking design. We invited multiple GM studios to envision Corvette-inspired hypercars — the first of which was revealed by our UK studio in March. The California team has now delivered a complementary study that honors Corvette’s legendary performance, while infusing it with their own distinctive vision. – Bryan Nesbitt, Vice President of global design
