A fuel cell Hilux is expected in 2028

Toyota took the wraps off the 9th-gen Hilux simultaneously in Thailand, Europe and Australia. Depending on the market, the new pick-up truck will be available in various body configurations and powertrain options, including—for the first time—with an all-electric powertrain. Prices in Australia start at $33,990 (4×2 WorkMate single cab).

More photos can be viewed here. But anyway, the design of the 9th-gen Hilux was done not in Japan or Europe, but by the design team at Toyota Australia. The comments on the internet I’ve seen from the past two days suggest that the people target audience is unimpressed with this new model, but I imagine the opinions might change in a few months. While the outgoing model sports relatively smoother lines, this new one has sharp, angular lines, especially on the front fascia.

There’s no Hilux GR Sport just yet, but in Australia, you get the Hilux Rugged X (available at a later date), while in Thailand, you get the Hilux Overland with GR Parts. Both are essentially heavily accessorized versions with better off-road/adventure capability.

The Hilux continues to be built on the Toyota IMV platform—which, believe it or not—was introduced back in 2004. I think it’s remarkable how a two-decade-old platform has been made to accommodate an all-electric version.

In Australia, you currently don’t get the Hilux BEV. What you get is a 2.8L 4-cylinder turbo diesel with 150 kW (204 metric hp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) when paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. With the 6-speed automatic, the torque goes up to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). A 48-volt mild-hybrid version is also available with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4L diesel will no longer be available in any market.

What about Thailand? Well, it’s the same situation. You get the aforementioned diesel powertrain. However, you also get the Hilux Travo-e in Thailand, which is an all-electric variant. For Europe, it is called the Hilux BEV.

The Hilux Travo-e comes with a dual-motor AWD configuration, with the front electric motor rated at 82.2 kW (112 metric hp) and 205.5 Nm (151.5 lb-ft) while the rear electric motor is rated at 129.3 kW (176 metric hp) and 268.6 Nm (198 lb-ft). The combined power output is capped at 144 kW (196 metric hp). A 59.2 kWh 296-volt lithium-ion battery pack is estimated to offer an NEDC range of up to 315 km (196 mi). For European markets, the WLTP range is estimated to be 240 km (149 mi). The battery pack can be DC fast-charged with up to 125 kW.

No petrol options then? Well, depending on the market, the 2.7L 4-cylinder N/A petrol may be offered. Toyota confirmed to be working on a fuel cell variant of the Hilux, expected to arrive sometime in 2028.

Key highlights inside include a digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, wireless smartphone charger, JBL premium audio system, USB-C ports, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of ADAS.
