Caterham 420 CUP debuts as the company’s best track car

Caterham has revealed the 420 CUP, billed as “the best track car” the company has ever made. But that doesn’t mean you can’t drive this on public roads; meaning, the 420 CUP is a track-focused road car. Base price starts at £54,990 in the UK.

The 420 CUP boasts Bilstein race suspension with fully-adjustable dampers with 10 stiffness settings (check out the numbering on the suspension). Other standard features include 13-inch Black Apollo alloy wheels wrapped with Avon ZZR tyres; uprated ventilated brakes with quad piston calipers; mesh grill with painted 7 logo; composite aeroscreen; composite cycle wings; a limited-slip differential, and a track day roll bar.

Inside, you get composite padded seats with bespoke CUP embroidery; Schroth 6-point racing harness; carbon vinyl tunnel top with red Alcantara-trimmed gaitor; 620-style carbon dashboard; Suede MOMO steering wheel with quick release; quick ratio steering rack, and bespoke CUP dials finished in red.

There’s a big list of options as well, including a track day roll cage, a sport roll cage, a race roll cage, aero wishbones, Avon ZZS tyres, carbon fibre aeroscreen, heated seats, VBOX Lite with 2 x cameras, VBOX HD2 with 2 x HD cameras, a tool kit, and a few more.

The 420 CUP is powered by a 2.0-litre (1999 cc) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated Ford petrol engine with the same 156.5 kW (210 bhp/213 metric hp) and 203 Nm (150 lb-ft) output figures as the regular Seven 420. However, the engine here is paired with Sadev 6-speed sequential transmission as opposed to a 5-speed manual in the regular Seven 420. Also, the official 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) time here is 3.6 seconds, which is quicker by 0.2 seconds compared with the regular Seven 420. The official top speed is the same 136 mph (219 km/h). A track day exhaust system is also included as standard.
