Bridgestone develops airless bicycle tires

Japanese tire giant Bridgestone with its Bridgestone Cycle Co Ltd, has announced of developing air free bicycle tires. The technology which it calls “Air Free Concept” for tires that do not need to be inflated with air. The company will advance feasibility studies in order to make this new tire available in the market by 2019.

The “Air Free Concept” is a technology that eliminates the need for tires to be inflated with air to support the weight, using a unique structure of spokes stretching along the inner sides of tires. In addition, “the resins that are used in the spokes and rubbers help realize more efficient use of resources,” said the company in an official release.

Bridgestone has been working on this “Air Free Concept” since 2013. The spoke structure is made from thermoplastic resin. The company says that along with the rubber in the tread portion, the materials used in the tires are recyclable, contributing to the efficient use of resources. The bicycle tires we saw earlier are a more practical versions of this concept.
