2026 Mercedes-Benz GLS facelift debuts with improvements

Nope, this ain’t a new-gen GLS, but a facelift or a mid-cycle refresh of the 3rd-gen (X167) GLS. Depending on the market, it’ll be sold as a 2027 model. Pricing is yet to be disclosed, but your local dealer might have a “close enough” idea. In the meantime, let’s take a look at what’s all the hoopla.

Let’s start with the styling revisions, then, shall we? The front fascia features new-gen Digital Light LED headlights, claimed to be having 40% increased lighting field while consuming 50% less energy than its predecessor. And of course, these are most likely not standard headlights. There’s a new star-patterned grille with an illuminated surround, and of course, there’s a new bumper. On the side, there are new 21- and 22-inch wheel options. If you continue towards the rear, there are star-shaped LED signatures, similar to those you may have seen in the recent Mercedes models. A panoramic glass roof is a standard affair.

The E-Active Body Control, available on GLS 580, is a 48-volt system that can even recuperate electrical energy on poor roads. The Airmatic air suspension now has a firmer, sportier tune than before. Thanks to cloud-based damper regulation with Airmatic, the vehicle automatically adjusts the damping just before encountering a bump.

In the GLS 450 4Matic (3.0L straight-six turbo petrol-electric mild-hybrid), torque is up by 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) to 560 Nm (413 lb-ft), thanks to upgrades such as a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor, a cylinder head with optimised intake and exhaust ports, and a modified intake camshaft.

For the first time, the two straight-six diesel models, the GLS 350d 4Matic and GLS 450d 4Matic, are equipped with an electrically heated catalyst. This brings the exhaust system up to the optimum temperature range early on and ensures that the temperature remains within the desired range throughout the entire driving cycle.

The V8-powered GLS 580 4Matic now offers 395 kW (537 metric hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), up by 15 kW and 20 Nm.

Inside, the MBUX Superscreen with three 12.3-inch displays comes standard. A 3D driver display is optionally available. For the rear passengers, two 11.6-inch full-HD displays with MBUX remote controls are available. All three seat rows are fully electrically adjustable. The seat massage feature has some new functions.
