Nope, not the cousin of Caracal
Bentley has begun a new chapter with the Torcal, the brand’s first fully electric vehicle (BEV). It’ll be available in two flavours: the regular Torcal and a spicier Torcal S. There’ll also be the Torcal First Edition, but I assume it’ll be in limited numbers. Pricing is not officially disclosed, but according to a few reliable sources, the base price starts at around £165,000.
The green one (officially Electrum Satin paint) is the Torcal First Edition and comes with some extra visual upgrades that can normally be commissioned as options. But anyway, if the Torcal reminds you of its cousin from Stuttgart, you’re not alone. It is, in fact, Bentley’s version of the Porsche Cayenne Electric. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think the Torcal looks Bentley enough. And that Bentley-ish grille has “illuminated diamonds” for some reason. If you remember the EXP 15 Concept Bentley showcased over a year ago, that’s where some of these gaudy styling elements come from.
The base Torcal rides on 21-inch wheels but the Torcal S and the First Edition ride on 22-inch wheels as standard. There are a few wheel design options too including aerodynamically optimized ones. Carbon Silicon Carbide (CSiC) ceramic discs are optional, with discs measuring 440 mm at the front and 410 mm at the rear.
The Torcal boasts a fully active suspension setup, a Bentley first. The setup includes adaptive two-valve dampers, claimed to deliver a true ‘magic carpet’ ride. Each damper can be actively and independently raised or lowered instantaneously, reacting to both road and driver inputs for maximum ride comfort and body control. Bentley says that the system negates the need for anti-roll bars, using the reactive dampers to provide infinitely adjustable anti-roll torque. All Wheel Steering is also included as standard.
Both the Torcals are dual-motor (permanent magnet synchronous) AWD models. The base Torcal settles for 604 kW (821 metric hp) and 1,194 Nm (881 lb-ft) of peak output figures, enabling a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The Torcal S boasts 653 kW (888 metric hp) and 1,350 Nm (996 lb-ft) when Launch Control is active, enabling a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph).
Both models draw juice from an 800-volt 113 kWh battery pack, estimated to deliver a WLTP range of up to 600 km (373 mi) depending on the model.
Key highlights inside include 16-way adjustable standard seats, new massage functions, optional Smart Seat Climate system, a 12.25-inch curved OLED touchscreen, new Ombre Walnut veneer inlays, and standard 16-speaker audio or optional 28-speaker Naim audio system. In addition to a 460-litre boot space, there’s a 90-litre frunk.
