The Pajero may not have seen as much success as its good friend Land Cruiser, but it is still quite a popular nameplate. There have been four generations since 1981, and just a few days ago, Mitsubishi took the wraps off the 5th-gen model, all set to go on sale in Thailand later this year, followed by Japan and Australian markets. In 2027, the new Pajero will also be available in ASEAN, Latin America, and the Middle Eastern markets.
It seems like the design team has let go of the “Dynamic Shield” design language for the 2027 Pajero. Instead, they’ve gone for a sculpted, muscular look with sleeping T-shaped light signatures. However, there are a few references to previous models, such as the C-pillar inspired by the roll cage of the first-gen model and a hexagonal tailgate sculpture that loosely reinterprets the rear-mounted spare wheel housing of the previous-gen model. For the grille, there are two options: a horizontal-bar grille and a honeycomb grille.
The 2027 Pajero is built on a ladder frame, the one that also underpins the 6th-gen Triton pickup and its Nissan cousin. The suspension setup includes independent double-wishbones at the front and a newly developed five-link rigid rear axle, both claimed to offer a perfect balance of strong off-road capability and a flat, composed ride. As for dimensions, the new Pajero measures 4,920 mm long, 1,925 mm wide and 1,910 mm6 high, with front and rear tracks of 1,630 mm and a wheelbase of 2,870 mm. Off-road credentials include a ground clearance of 230 mm, an approach angle of 30.4 degrees, a breakover angle of 22.6 degrees, and a departure angle of 25.8 degrees. In addition, there’s the S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control), SS4-II system, and Active Yaw Control (AYC).
The SS4-II system allows drivers to select from four 4WD drive modes according to driving conditions: 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time 4WD), 4HLc (locked center differential), and 4LLc (locked center differential with low-range gears).
Some of the key highlights inside include MI-PILOT (highway single-lane driving assistance system), 3D Multi Around Monitor, a 12-speaker Yamaha Ultimate audio system, two 14.3-inch screens, three-zone automatic climate control, ventilated seats, and 8 airbags, including a center airbag.
Moving on to the business end of the story, the 2027 Pajero is powered by a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine, pumping out 150 kW (204 metric hp) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft). The engine is coupled with an Aisin 8-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system.
