The next generation of the legendary G-Class’ interiors has been officially revealed ahead of the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Its dashboard was leaked a month ago.

The fresh design retains the G-Class’ utilitarian layout and hallmark features such as the grab handle and chrome-highlighted switches for the differential locks. The turbine-style air vents we saw in the new MB cars have made it to the new G-Class as well, naturally, and so are the two 12.3-inch displays that visually blend into a wide-screen cockpit beneath a shared glass cover. Drivers can choose between three different styles for the displays — “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive” — and also configure relevant information and views according to their individual needs, said the company.

However, analogue dials with one infotainment display are standard as seen in one of the pictures here.

Also new is the steering wheel with touch controls that respond to swiping motions. These touchpads provide haptic impulses and additional feedback from onboard speakers, helping the driver use them without taking the eyes off the road.

As for the other bits, the standard audio system features 7 speakers. The Burmester surround sound system with 16 speakers and a 590-watt amplifier with Digital Sound Processing is available as an option.

Every “G” bears a certification mark in the form of a “Schöckl” badge at the base of its B-pillar. It refers to the Graz plant’s local mountain, used by Mercedes-Benz for its hard, merciless testing, which each off-roader must be able to conquer.

The stowage space concept has been thoroughly overhauled, with numerous new storage areas ensuring that everything has a home, said Mercedes. Under the armrest, for example, is an illuminated compartment for small items such as chewing gum, handkerchiefs, or sunglasses. A wireless charging point here can be specified as an optional extra. The rear doors are each capable of accommodating a 1-litre water bottle. The rear bench seat has a freestanding backrest, allowing maximum variability and better visibility through the rear side windows. They can be folded down to 60, 40, or 100%.

Buyers can opt for a more comfortable ride with the Active Multicontour Seat package, which has features including a range of massage functions, climatized seats and fast seat heating. Apparently, the front seats of the Active Multicontour Seat package are recommended by experts from the German spinal health organization “Aktion Gesunder Rücken e.V.”

General space has been improved as well —

Area Difference
Legroom – front +38 mm
Legroom – rear +150 mm
Shoulder width – front +38 mm
Shoulder width – rear +27 mm
Elbow room – front +68 mm
Elbow room – front +56 mm

The AMG line gets red contrast stitching, red seat belts and a flat-bottom steering wheel.
