If you see the Suzuki Jimny release timelines, you’ll notice there’s a gap of 17 to 20 years. The 3rd-gen Jimny went on sale in 1998, and the 4th-gen didn’t arrive until mid-2018. That’s a lot of gap between generations. Suffice it to say that we won’t be seeing the 5th-gen for at least another 5 years, maybe. Which brings us to the topic of today. The Jimny that was spotted testing in ice somewhere in Northern Europe must be an EV, right?
The camouflaged prototype does suggest that it’s an EV. I mean, except for that EV-typical closed-off grille with horizontal DRLs, the rest of the vehicle appears to be exactly the same as the 4th-gen 5-door Jimny. It also appears to have ADAS cameras on the windshield.
As you probably know, the Jimny was discontinued in Europe sometime in 2020 due to non-compliance with stringent European emission standards. But the demand has always existed, and lately, individuals in Europe have been privately importing Jimnys from Japan. Suzuki is most likely aware of this situation and is probably working on officially reintroducing the Jimny back into Europe, this time in EV format.
There’s no official statement on when this might happen, but it won’t be a surprise if the global debut happens by the end of 2027 or early 2028. But either way, it remains to be seen if the Jimny EV will be just as capable as its 1.5L N/A-powered sibling.
