[2019 update: the EMotion project has been delayed or shelved]

Henrik Fisker of Fisker Inc. has come up with an all-electric EMotion sedan. For those who have no clue, Fisker made his first attempt in 2011 with ‘Fisker Karma’, a range-extendable plug-in hybrid electric sports sedan. By the end of 2012, his company filed for bankruptcy and sold the assets to a Chinese company which renamed it as Karma Automotive.

Danish-born Fisker was a Design Director for Aston Martin in the 2000s and had worked on the DB9 and V8 Vantage. Before his stint at Aston, he worked for BMW designing the Z8. You can see those Z8 lines in the Karma.

Just like the Karma, the EMotion too looks like some underwater sea creature. It doesn’t remind you of any other car except the Karma. It has that uniqueness in the design, which I think needs to be appreciated.

Fisker says that the EMotion is a clean-sheet design from the inside out, utilizing a carbon fibre and aluminium structure for its body. The frontal crash structure is patented, and exceeds current standards to protect all occupants. The wheels are a combination of carbon fibre and aluminium, developed in collaboration with Dymag, and is claimed to reduce rotational mass by 40%, further improving the electric range.

The EMotion has a range of over 400 miles (640+ km) with a patent-pending battery pack and cooling system. Charging happens with the proprietary UltraCharger technology, which is claimed to get you a range of over 100 miles (160 km) in 9 minutes. The top speed is 161 mph (260 km/h).

The front end’s aluminium centerpiece houses a LIDAR system. Side mirrors conceal two cameras, which enable panoramic, 360-degree views to the driver.

The vehicle will be sold directly through Fisker’s website, and servicing will be done through The Hybrid Shop (THS), a joint venture between Fisker Inc. and THS.

Pre-orders will officially begin from June 30th, and a full reveal is expected at the same time.
