After the Brouillard and the F.K.P. Hommage, Bugatti took the wraps off its 3rd chapter under the Programme Solitaire (bespoke one-offs), and it’s called the Destrier. Named after a horse from the medieval period, the Destrier is billed as a sculpture of speed. If it’s not already obvious from its proportions, the Destrier is based on the Bolide.
The Destrier is essentially a road version of the Bolide. Some VIP collector probably had a spare Bolide and asked Bugatti to drape a brand new body on it, and the result is pretty wild, I think. For those wondering, Bugatti made 40 Bolides (officially), and most likely, VIP collectors grabbed multiple units. The Destrier is dramatically lower than any other Bugatti, standing just about a metre tall. Adding to the drama are the wheels – 20-inch at the front and 21 at the rear, a significant step up from the Bolide’s 18-inch ones. The traditional Bugatti C-line is present here too, and the horseshoe grille is wider than that of the Bolide.
The exterior is finished in “Sapphire Celeste”, a bespoke, multi-layered color created exclusively for this car and its owner. The paint apparently has Diamond-inspired sparkles. The only exposed carbon fibre parts are the front splitter and the rear diffuser. The blue paint is a homage to the 57SC Atlantic chassis 57591 – originally owned by Richard Pope, a British barrister and tennis player. The Atlantic’s original blue paint was changed to black by its current owner.
The cockpit is swathed in three materials: leather and nubuck, both in “Ambre Voyageur” – a warm brown – and an advanced 3D-knitted textile. The touchpoints are finished with hammered brightwork components, the same material that is used for the exterior C-line. Also, notice a small French flag on the firewall.
The Destrier retains the Bolide’s 8.0L W16 quad-turbo as is with 1,177 kW (1,600 metric hp) and 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft). A 7-speed DCT is hooked-up with an all-wheel-drive system.
