If you’re familiar with Japan’s “Kei car” segment, you’ll like the “cute” looks of this Toyota Copen GR Sport. Now, the Copen GR Sport is not a newly developed car from the ground up, but it is actually a Daihatsu Copen facelift with styling from Gazoo Racing. According to Toyota, this is GR’s entry-level model (in Japan).

The car gets sporty bumpers front and rear, LED headlights with black bezels, LED rear combination lights with a similar dark tone, LED fog lights, BBS forged-aluminum wheels with matte gray finish, and GR badges.

Interiors get Momo leather-wrapped steering wheel, carbon fibre-like inserts on the dashboard, piano black inserts on the door pads and centre console, and Recaro seats. The instrument cluster is GR branded too.

Toyota said that the development was specifically focused on body rigidity and suspension tuning. The former was achieved by adding a front brace and changing the shape of the center brace. As for the suspension, the spring rate was optimized for body rigidity. The coil springs are painted in red for added visual drama.

As with all the Kei cars, the Copen GR Sport is powered by a 660 cc 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with an output of 47 kW (64 hp) at 6,400 rpm and 92 Nm of torque at 3,200 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT; the latter gets paddle shifters for simulated shifts. The car also gets a front LSD. The Copen GR Sport will be built by Daihatsu at Ikeda Plant (Osaka). The manual and CVT variants are priced at ¥2,435,000 and ¥2,380,000, respectively.
