Hyundai has updated the Ioniq range which includes the pure electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid variants, for the model year 2020. In the U.S. market, the 2020 Ioniq hybrid and the plug-in hybrid variants start at $23,000 and $26,300, respectively.

The design updates are rather subtle. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants get a new mesh-type grille while the all-electric variant gets a closed grille with a distinctive pattern. There are new LED headlamps, LED taillamps, and new wheel designs too.

The wheels on the electric variant measure 16-inch as standard while the hybrid buyers can choose between 15 and 17-inch (optional) wheel designs. Apparently, the exterior paint includes ingredients extracted from soybean oil to achieve a polished metallic effect.

For the interior materials too, sustainability is the order of the day. The door covers are made of recycled plastic combined with powdered wood and volcanic stone. The raw materials extracted from sugar cane are partly applied to the headliner and cargo area.

Equipment highlights for the 2020 Ioniq Electric (SE) includes an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto compatibility, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go. The Limited trim gets a 10.25-inch Navigation system, Harman Kardon premium audio, Highway Driving Assist, Lane Follow Assist, and Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection.

The new Ioniq Electric’s battery has been upgraded from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh. It boasts 36% additional energy storage capacity, offering a total of 170 miles (274 km) of estimated range. Its e-motor delivers 134 hp and 218 lb.-ft. (295 Nm) of torque and is fitted as standard with a 7.2 kW onboard charger — an upgrade from the current 6.6 kW — for Type 2 AC charging. Using a 100 kW fast-charging station, the battery is claimed to reach up to 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes.
