Mazda CX-9 gets more torque and tech for 2020

Mazda has updated the CX-9 for the model year 2020, which includes more performance from the engine and the addition of more technologies. There aren’t any visual enhancements, however, the top-of-the-range Signature trim gets a new, darker silver wheel finish.

New option for the Touring Premium Package and Grand Touring are the second-row captain’s chairs. They are standard and heated on the Signature trims. Other options for the Touring Premium Package includes two new USB ports in the third row, a power moonroof, 12-speaker Bose audio system, second-row retractable sunshades, a 3-month SiriusXM trial subscription, LED fog lamps, and front and rear parking sensors.

The base Sport trim gets new standard features such as heated front cloth seats, power driver’s seat with lumbar support, rain-sensing wipers, heated outside mirrors, automatic on/off headlights and High Beam Control.

Mazda’s full suite of i-Activsense safety features are now standard which includes Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection, Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning with Lane-Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring System, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Other standard features include a 7-inch Mazda Connect infotainment system, LED headlights and taillights, one-touch front and rear power windows, rear privacy glass, 3-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, keyless entry and push-button start. The Touring trim adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new 9-inch touchscreen display, leather-trimmed seats, power-adjustable passenger seats, second-row power slide and tilt, and a power liftgate with adjustable height.

As for the business end, the 2.5-litre (2488 cc) 4-cylinder turbocharged Skyactiv-G engine now delivers 320 lb-ft (434 Nm) of torque on 93 octane gasoline – an increase of 10 lb-ft (14 Nm) on the outgoing model year. The rest of the numbers are the same. The torque is 310 lb-ft (420 Nm) on 87 octane gasoline and so is the 227 hp. With 93 octane gasoline, the output is 250 hp. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda’s predictive i-Activ AWD system is standard in the Signature and is available on all other trim levels. New for the 2020 CX-9 is an off-road traction assist, which replaces the traction control button. G-Vectoring Control Plus is also standard for 2020; the tech is claimed to further improve the steering response.

The 2020 CX-9 starts at $33,790. The top-end Signature trim is priced at $46,115.
