Subaru has revealed a JDM-spec version of the 5th gen WRX that made its North American debut not too long ago. Called the WRX S4, the sports sedan comes in four flavours in Japan: GT-H, GT-H EX, STI Sport R and STI Sport R EX. Prices start at JPY 4,004,000 (US$ 35,332 or INR 26.52 lakh).
Although the styling is identical compared with the American version, the addition of STI badges, dark grey front grille and STI-specific wheels takes the sporty looks to another level. Also, notice a rear windscreen wiper that is absent in the American/global version.
The STI cockpit looks a lot more sporty, thanks to the STI-branded flat-bottom steering wheel, red contrast stitching and Bordeaux-Black theme throughout. The Recaro front seats you’re seeing here is a factory option. Also, notice a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster which comes standard in EX trims.
The STI doesn’t get any special performance upgrades compared with other trims in the lineup. The 2.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged Boxer engine offers the same 202 kW (275 metric hp/271 bhp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque as the global model. However, the Japs are not getting the manual offered in the US market. The engine is hooked up with a CVT and an AWD system. The STI models get ZF electronically controlled dampers.
