BMW Vision Neue Klasse X shows off its classy styling

Following the debut of the Vision Neue Klasse (concept) last year, BMW is now showcasing the Vision Neue Klasse X—an SUV iteration of the aforementioned sedan. Production is planned to commence sometime in 2025 at the company’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary.

Although the original Neue Klasse models of the ’60s were sedans and coupes, I guess now it’s mandatory to offer an SUV option. The Neue Klasse X largely follows the same design language as its sedan sibling, but there’s one in-your-face difference, and that is of course, the kidney grille. In this SUV iteration, the design team decided to give the kidneys extra prominence—as opposed to using the black element that surrounds the lights as kidneys. But thankfully, the kidneys look fairly proportionate.

There are XXL large lower intakes as well, which are not present in the sedan. Overall, I would say it’s a clean design, and I kinda like it. Notice how the stepped/embossed design element on the bonnet sort of continues toward the back of the car and ends with the separation between the taillights. For those wondering, the exterior paintwork is called Coral Silver.

BMW didn’t share any technical details of this SUV concept, but as with the Neue Klasse sedan, the Neue Klasse X will also be powered by the company’s 6th generation eDrive technology—a more advanced version of the 5th gen eDrive we read about in 2017. The Neue Klasse models will benefit from an 800-volt architecture, enabling a 300 km (186 mi) range with just 10 minutes of DC fast-charging. The battery pack will contain new cylindrical cells with 20% higher energy density compared with prismatic cells used in the past.

Inside, it’s pretty much the same idea as the sedan concept; there’s a large central touchscreen and another thin display (called BMW Panoramic Vision) that spans the full width of the dashboard. You can customize the information that is presented in this widescreen via the touchscreen. The production model will also have the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and a 3D head-up display. Furthermore, there’ll be a feature called the HYPERSONX WHEEL, which is claimed to offer users a personalized sound experience – not just with music but also with nature sounds.
