Daihatsu Midget X concept debuts with sports car seating layout

Daihatsu-Midget X concept

Why should sports cars have all the fun?

Daihatsu Midget was a kei-class pick-up truck that ran for two generations (1957-2001). During its second-generation, it was also sold as a cargo van before ending production in late 2001. At the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, Daihatsu announced its plans to revive the Midget by showcasing the Midget X concept.

In terms of the design, the Midget X concept looks like a modernized version of the original, but it also looks very robotish/autonomous delivery vehicle. The truck “bed”, or rather a box in this case, appears to be significantly smaller than that of the original, but let’s wait and see how the production model turns out. If I understood the official statements correctly, the size of the vehicle itself is the result of people’s feedback. But either way, it’s an interesting vehicle indeed, and it seems more suitable for food/grocery delivery partners. The bed or box could be modular and customizable depending on the needs.

Inside, there’s an interesting seating situation, one that is similar to the McLaren F1 and Gordon Murray T.50 😉 This seating layout wasn’t there in the previous two generations. But anyway, the steering is a yoke, and there’s a display on either side of the yoke. The traditional mirrors are replaced by cameras. Also, notice the cookie storage tray on the driver’s seat.

What powers the Midget X concept? Well, there are no details just yet, but it’ll be a battery-electric vehicle.
