Unless you’re a McLaren nerd, the McLaren nomenclature can be quite confusing, especially with the 6 and the 7 series models. But hey, the story is coming to an end with this last chapter, and according to McLaren, the 788HS is the final evolution of the 720S, 750S and 765LT Supercar series.
The ‘HS’ in the name stands for ‘High Sport’, and in the past, this badge has been bestowed upon only two models: the MP4-12C HS and the 675LT-based MSO HS. Visually, the 788HS doesn’t look all that different from the 765LT or the 750S, except for a more aggressive bodykit. The design includes a new S-Duct bonnet, a bespoke front splitter, a raised active rear spoiler, and an F1-inspired rear diffuser. Of course, the Coupe derivative gets a roof scoop. McLaren claims a 10% increase in downforce compared with the 765LT. A full visual carbon fibre bodywork option is also available.
The Proactive Chassis Control III linked-hydraulic suspension system has bespoke tuning for even higher levels of dynamic performance. The car rides 5 mm lower compared with the 750S. Braking duties are handled by carbon ceramic discs, derived from those on the Senna. The front discs are gripped by six-piston forged aluminium monoblock calipers. There’s an integrated cooling system for the brakes. The 788HS also boasts the first centre-lock wheels ever fitted to this Supercar series.
Powered by the same M840T 4.0L biturbo V8 engine with lightweight forged pistons, the 788HS pumps out 580 kW (788 metric hp/778 bhp) at 7,500 rpm and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) at 5,500 rpm. Thanks to a dry weight of only 1,265 kg (2,789 lbs), the 788HS can sprint from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, and on to a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph).
Production is limited to 200 vehicles globally, with an equal split across Coupe and Spider variants. Pricing is not officially disclosed, but according to reports, the base price starts at around £450,000.
