Swedish hypercar maker Koenigsegg has announced that all 80 units of the Regera have been taken. For the first time, Regera is the largest single vehicle series in Koenigsegg’s history.

Koenigsegg-Direct-Drive

The plug-in hybrid hypercar is known for not having a traditional transmission or the “gearbox” as we know it, in order to eliminate its inherent energy losses and also to cut down weight. Instead, it gets the Christian’s patent-pending Koenigsegg Direct Drive transmission (KDD) with a single, 2.73 ratio fixed gear (final drive).

In simple terms, two 180 kW (245 hp) electric motors on the rear axle will do the initial acceleration to get you going from a standstill, and as the speed and RPM builds up, the hydraulic coupling starts to close. Now, the 160 kW (217 hp) third electric motor which is connected to the ICE (combustion engine) will also aid in the acceleration, and as you gain more speed, the hydraulic coupling closes up allowing a direct drive from the engine to the rear wheels. In layman terms, the initial traction needed to get the car moving is taken care of by the electric motors.

Koenigsegg says the KDD results in a seamless acceleration from zero to over 400 km/h (248 mph) in as little as 20 seconds.

The 5.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with premium gasoline produces 1,100 hp at 7,800 rpm (redline at 8,250 rpm), and a max torque of 1,280 Nm (944 lb-ft) at 4,100 rpm. The power output is more with E85. The Electric Drive on the other hand produces 700 hp and 870 Nm (642 lb-ft) of torque. The combined output (ICE + ED) is 1,500 hp.

As we know already, Koenigsegg is obsessed with weight reduction. The Regera weighs 1,470 kg (3,241 lbs) dry and 1,590 kg (3,505 lbs) curb (all liquids and full fuel tank).

The Regera is a new high watermark for Koenigsegg Automotive. It has been our greatest technical challenge and as such, it is also our greatest technical triumph. That our customers and dealers have seen and appreciated the work we’ve done on the Regera is a source of great pride for everyone at Koenigsegg. – Christian von Koenigsegg, Founder & CEO
