As you may remember, earlier this year, some strange news emerged from China. Audi has launched a China-exclusive new brand called AUDI. This “new” all-caps brand will co-exist with the traditional Audi brand in China. The first product under this new brand is the E5 Sportback, a 5-door station wagon, with prices starting at ¥235,900 (US$33,029 or €28,342).

These prices, I’m told, are introductory. For those wondering, this car is not listed on the regular Audi China website, but on the SAIC-Audi China website.
Production has begun in China, with first deliveries commencing later this month. As you may know, there’s a whole bunch of brands under the SAIC umbrella in China, and one of the new brands under this umbrella is IM Motors, a joint venture between SAIC and Alibaba Group. The E5 Sportback we’re seeing here, sits on the same platform as the IM L6 sedan and the IM LS6 SUV. It’s a clean, aerodynamic design with lots of air inlets and outlets. Those LEDs perform welcome animations with multiple options to choose from. Notice that this capitalized AUDI brand doesn’t carry the rings logo, thus differentiating from the traditional Audi brand.

The E5 Sportback is a large, D-segment vehicle. Meaning, it measures 4,881 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,479 mm tall. The wheelbase measures 2,950 mm.
Rear-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive options are available for buyers, with the most powerful one offering a power output of 579 kW or 787 metric hp, and a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 3.4 seconds. The other three models offer power outputs of 220 kW (299 metric hp), 300 kW (408 metric hp), and 425 kW (578 metric hp). A 100 kWh battery pack from CATL is estimated to offer a range of up to 770 km (478 mi) depending on the variant, and thanks to 800-volt architecture, up to 370 km (230 mi) range can be refilled in 10 minutes.
The equally conceptish interior features a 27-inch pillar-to-pillar 4K display—powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 automotive chipset; AUDI Assistant, an AI-powered touch- and voice-enabled avatar, and LiDAR-based AUDI 360 Assisted Driving system.
