BMW iX3 debuts as the first Neue Klasse model

That’s right; this is the production version of the Vision Neue Klasse X (concept) we saw earlier in 2024. Unsurprisingly, it’s the SUV that became the first series-production Neue Klasse model, despite the sedan Neue Klasse concept debuting months earlier. But anyway, the new BMW iX3 starts at €68,900 in Germany.

The production iX3 retains most of the design elements from the concept, including the shape of the lights, the retro small “grille”, the roof integrated rear wing, and the overall silhouette in general. The design may seem polarizing at first, but I’m pretty sure this will grow fairly quickly. Those glowing stuff on the grille is an optional extra (€1,060). BMW claims a drag co-efficient of 0.24 Cd.

Unlike the previous-gen iX3, this new model is not related to its ICE cousins. Meaning, it is not built on the CLAR platform. The new iX3 is built on the electric exclusive Neue Klasse platform.

It measures 4,782 mm long, 1,895 mm wide and 1,635 mm tall. The wheelbase of 2,897 mm should ensure generous space for all occupants and their luggage. Speaking of the luggage, the capacity is rated up to 1,750 litres, excluding the 58 litre frunk. The SUV rolls off the factory with 20-inch light-alloy wheels as standard, but there are options for up to 22-inches.

The new iX3 is available with a single variant for now, which is the iX3 50 xDrive. There are two motors, an electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) at the rear and an asynchronous motor (ASM) at the front. Regadless, neither of ’em contain permanent magnets, which is a good thing. The combined output figures are 345 kW (469 metric hp) and 645 Nm (476 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 4.9 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 210 km/h (130 mph). Unladen DIN weight is 2,285 kg (5,038 lbs).

A 108.7 kWh (net) battery pack is estimated to offer a range of anywhere between 679 and 805 km (422-500 mi). The battery pack can handle DC fast-charging with up to 400 kW.

Key highlights inside include the so-called BMW Panoramic Vision display that stretches across the full width of the windscreen, a 17.9-inch central display, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, heated & electrically adjustable front seats, two-zone climate control (3-zone optional), optional 3D Head-Up Display, optional M Sport seats, optional M Sport steering wheel, and optional 13-speaker Harman Kardon HiFi system. Yes, that panoramic glass roof is also an option (€1,420).
