The 2017 UEFA Champions League Final match between the Juventus and Real Madrid in Cardiff, was also the venue for unveiling the updated Nissan X-Trail. Nissan is the official automotive partner of UEFA Champions League, in case if you are wondering.

Updates for the third generation X-Trial include a more prominent and wider ‘V-motion’ grille, a new aggressive bumper design with a rectangular fog lamp housing.

Revised headlamp clusters feature a contemporary new version of the X-Trail’s ‘boomerang’ Daytime Running Lights. The headlamps feature Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS) for the first time. Rear end gets a new bumper design with chrome details. The tail lamps have been upgraded to full LED. There’s also a new shark fin antenna for improved reception and a more contemporary finish.

Interiors feature a new D-shaped steering wheel (flat bottom), which gets heating functionality for the first time. Other features include gloss black accents, heated seats, eight-speaker BOSE Premium audio system, DAB digital radio, NissanConnect touchscreen sat nav, and reclining second row seats. A new tan and black two-tone leather interior is an optional extra on Tekna grade.

Nissan says the boot on the new X-Trail is now larger than before, with the capacity rising from 550 litres to 565 litres on the five-seat version. The total space with all seats folded rises to 1,996 litres.

Safety kit includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The engine range includes 130 PS 1.6-litre diesel, 163 PS 1.6-litre petrol, and the 2.0-litre 177 PS diesel which was introduced last year. The diesel variants get a choice of 6-Speed manual or a CVT, and 2WD or 4WD, while the petrol is limited to 2WD and MT.

For the 2018 model year, the X-Trail will be available with ProPILOT autonomous drive technology. ProPILOT will control the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways during heavy traffic congestion and high-speed cruising.

There are new 17 and 18-inch wheels on offer, plus a chrome side moulding across the base of the two doors on range-topping Tekna grade.

Exterior colour choices include Orange Pearl, Red Pearl, Blue Pearl Metallic, and Dark Brown Pearl.

Nissan says, including the USA, where the X-Trail is badged Rogue, more than 3.7 million cars have been sold since the first-generation model was launched in 2000. That includes almost half a million cars in Europe, where the X-Trail remains hugely popular.

Approximately 115,000 units have been sold in Europe since the third-generation model was launched in 2014, and demand has grown significantly year on year. Sales doubled from 2014 to 2015, and the total rose again by another 40% the following year.

In FY16 the X-Trail (including Rogue) sold 766,000 units, more than any other rival model, added the company.

The X-Trail facelift will go on sale in Europe from August 2017.
