Toyota Fortuner mild-hybrid makes South African debut

Ah yes, the good old Toyota Fortuner. It’s a nameplate that ruled the Indian roads for quite a long time before blingy front-wheel-drive sh*tboxes took over, and sadly, Toyota’s Indian arm ended-up becoming a Maruti Suzuki dealer in order to survive. I mean, you can’t completely blame the dumbdians either because Toyota drove the prices to Mars even before SpaceX could go. But anyway, the Fortuner has received a mild-hybrid powertrain option for the South African market, with prices starting at R 834,800 (INR 36.07 lakh).

Unlike in the Indian market where Toyota sells two variants of Fortuner (Fortuner, Fortuner Legender) (there was also the Fortuner GR-S on sale for a short period), there’s only one Fortuner for South Africa. Visually, it looks the same except for that 48V badge on the tailgate.

The mild-hybrid variant is available in combination with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine. The output figures are 150 kW (204 metric hp) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft); same as the non hybrid variant that’s on sale here. The engine comes paired with the 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox, and there’s no manual option for this one. However, buyers have RWD and 4×4 options. One of the features of a mild-hybrid system is reduced fuel consumption, and so, in theory, this variant should offer a better overall fuel economy.

The Fortuner in South Africa comes fairly well-equipped with features including an 8-inch touchscreen, a 11-speaker JBL audio system, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, and ADAS such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System, Active Traction Control, Pre-Crash System, etc.
