A left-hand-drive Peugeot 208 has landed in India (Mumbai), four months after the PSA Group joined hands with CK Birla Group to re-introduce Peugeot brand in India by 2020. The hatchback is probably here to start the study of Indian conditions and to collect the data for fine tuning. PSA had announced to setup a JV with Hindustan Motors for assembly in Tamil Nadu, most likely in the same plant which is currently being used for Mitsubishi vehicles.

As for the Peugeot 208, the hatchback is available with six engines internationally, ranging from 1.0 litre petrol to 1.6 litre diesel. The one landed in India wears PureTech badge, suggesting the 1.2 litre 3-cylinder petrol under the hood, producing 82 hp and 118 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-Speed manual gearbox. In the international markets such as UK, there are GTI, GT Line and Black Edition performance and sporty variants too.

The UK-spec model comes with features such as automatic headlamps, LED tail lamps, 7-inch touchscreen with Sat Nav, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, ESP, standard 6 airbags, park assist with reversing camera, optional Active City Brake and many more.

PSA’s goal is to enter the Indian market by 2020, if the Swift, Hyundai Elite i20 and VW Polo will still be around, the 208 will have some tough contenders once it hits the market.
