Mahindra has launched the much-awaited Alturas G4 on Saturday night in Jaipur, priced at Rs 26.95 lakh and Rs 29.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for 2WD and 4WD variants, respectively. Prices are introductory.

As you might know already, the Alturas G4 is the Indian-ized version of the second generation SsangYong Rexton. Besides the Mahindra badges, the SUV wears the familiar family grille to distinguish itself from its Korean cousin.

Exterior equipment includes twin-chamber HID headlamps, LED DRLs which also function as turn signals, LED fog lamps with cornering lamps, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, chrome window surrounds and silver-black dual-tone roof rails.

At the rear, there are LED combo tail lamps connected by a chrome accent. The product badging at the rear is rather loud and not to everyone’s tastes.

The interior layout is functional and nothing too jazzy. Depending on the variant, feature list includes dual-tone Quilted Nappa leather upholstery in Tan & Black, soft touch dashboard and door pads, 8-way power adjustable driver seat with memory, ventilated seats, dual-zone auto AC, 2nd and 3rd row AC vents, ambient lighting, tilt & telescopic adjustment for steering wheel, 2nd row USB charger, reclining 2nd row seats, rain sensing wipers, sunroof with anti-pinch, all four power windows with anti-pinch, heated ORVMs which auto-tilt while reversing, front & rear parking sensors, cruise control and powered tailgate.

When it comes to entertainment and other technology, there is an 8-inch touchscreen which supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 7-inch color MID with 3 modes, 3D surround view camera, 6 speakers and electronic parking brake with auto-hold function.

Powertrain
Powering the Alturas G4 is a 2.2-litre (2,157 cc) 4-cylinder diesel engine which develops 133 kW (178 bhp) @ 4,000 rpm and 420 Nm of torque @ 1,600-2,600 rpm. A 7-speed automatic sourced from Mercedes-Benz sends power to the all four wheels.

The first gen Rexton too had some Mercedes in it, a lot of Mercedes in fact. It was based on the M-Class (W163) platform and also sourced engines and transmissions.

Last but not the least, the Alturas G4 measures 4,850 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width and 1,845 mm in height (including roof rails). Wheelbase measures 2,865 mm.

Front suspension is a double wishbone with coil springs while the rear is a 5-link with coil springs.
