SsangYong Tivoli won’t make it to Indian market

The SsangYong Tivoli unveiled at the Auto Expo earlier this year won’t make it to the Indian market. The Korean brand owned by Mahindra & Mahindra has reportedly shelved its plans to launch in India. M&M Executive Director, Mr. Pawan Goenka has confirmed the same.

Speaking to the media at the 56th Annual ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association) Convention, Goenka said, “SsangYong was never acquired to bring its products to India. That was not the primary purpose why we (Mahindra) acquired SsangYong. We happened to bring Rexton, that SUV didn’t do well, we admit that. But that was not at all a barometer for whether SsangYong did well or not did well (in the country).”

Mahindra has a 70% stake in the SsangYong brand and has only one product on offer in India – the Rexton. However, the company is working on a new compact SUV codenamed S201 for India, which will be based on the same platform as Tivoli, and is expected to debut sometime in 2018.
