The ‘before’ here means that the new 6 Series Gran Turismo is a replacement for the successful 5 Series GT. Public debut is slated at the Frankfurt’s International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2017, while the market launch is sometime in November 2017.

So then, what are the new things? Well, to begin with, the increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel for body and chassis components has shaved off around 150 kg from the outgoing model. With 5,091 mm in length, there is an 87 mm increase on its predecessor, resulting in a wheelbase of 3,070 mm. While the width at 1,902 mm remains unchanged, the height has been cut by 21 mm, and now measures 1,538 mm.

Depending on the engine variant, the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint is 0.7 seconds quicker (630i Gran Turismo) than in the equivalent predecessor, says BMW. The updated design also results in a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd, compared to the predecessor’s figure of 0.29 Cd.

The list of improvements continue with the efficiency as well. As per the NEDC test cycle, the fuel consumption and emissions figures are as much as 15% lower than before, says BMW.

While we’re seeing the back of the car in the above picture, let’s talk about the boot as well. The boot capacity of 610 litres is 110 litres larger than before, and the sill has been lowered by more than 5 cm, making it flush with the boot floor. With 40:20:40 split rear seats, the max load space has increased to 1,800 litres, up 100 litres on the outgoing model.

There will be three variants from launch, the 630i, 640i, and the 630d. While the 8-speed Steptronic transmission is standard, the xDrive AWD system is optional for the 640i and the 630d variants.

Output: 250 kW/340 hp at 5,500 – 6,500 rpm,
Max torque: 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at 1,380 – 5,200 rpm.
Acceleration: 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds / 5.3 seconds,
Top speed: 250 km/h (155 mph) / 250 km/h (155 mph).

BMW 630d Gran Turismo / BMW 630d xDrive Gran Turismo
6-cylinder 2,993 cc in-line diesel engine, 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
Output: 195 kW/265 hp at 4,000 rpm,
Max torque: 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) at 2,000 – 2,500 rpm.
Acceleration: 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds / 6.0 seconds,
Top speed: 250 km/h (155 mph) / 250 km/h (155 mph).

The new 6 Series GT packs a big list of comfort, driver assistance and safety features. These include a Head-Up Display which is 70% larger than before, 10.25-inch iDrive system with Touch Controller on the centre console, self-levelling air suspension on the rear axle, optional adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control, Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Collision Mitigation, standard stereo camera as well as optional radar and ultrasonic sensors, Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning systems, Side Collision Warning and the evasion aid, Crossing traffic warning, Priority warning, Crossroads warning and Wrong-way warning, and a lot more.

The aforementioned standard two-axle air suspension allows the vehicle’s ride height to be adjusted manually, meaning that ground clearance can be increased by 20 mm at the touch of a button. The vehicle can also be lowered by 10 mm either manually or automatically when Sport mode is engaged via the Driving Experience Control switch, or when the car’s speed exceeds 120 km/h (75 mph).
