FCA has unveiled the 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The company said that the new model has significant improvements over the one it replaces. To begin with, the new truck is around 225 lbs (102 kg) lighter and features 98% high-strength steel. The maximum payload increased to 2,300 lbs (1,043 kg), and the maximum trailer tow to 12,750 lbs (5,783 kg). Also improved is the aerodynamics with the drag coefficient of 0.357 Cd.

The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 (305 hp and 269 lb-ft/365 Nm) and the legendary 5.7-litre HEMI V8 (395 hp and 410 lb-ft/556 Nm) engines power the new Ram 1500 with eTorque 48-volt mild hybrid system. The eTorque adds up to 90 lb-ft (122 Nm) of torque to the 3.6L V6 and up to 130 lb-ft (176 Nm) to the 5.7L HEMI V8.

The 5.7L engine gets Fuel Saver Technology (cylinder deactivation) that shuts off four of the engine’s eight cylinders during light load operation. The engine control computer turns off fuel and spark, and closes the intake and exhaust valves.

Transmission is a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic with a wide spread of gear ratios to keep the engine rpm in the right range for the task – whether putting in a full day of off-road work or highway cruising.

The BorgWarner 48-12 for part-time 4WD with Hi and Low ranges; and the BorgWarner 48-11 for on-demand 4WD are available in the 2019 Ram 1500. Both transfer cases engage via a push-button control center-mounted underneath the rotary gear selector on the instrument panel.

New for 2019 is an electronic locking differential for 4WD models, and Max Tow Package for 2WD trucks powered by the 5.7L HEMI V8 with eTorque.

As for the brakes, the 2019 Ram 1500 is claimed to feature the largest front brake rotors in the segment at 14.9-inches.

Other features include Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks, four-corner air suspension, new electric parking brake, and full LED Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS).

Interiors get a 12-inch reconfigurable touchscreen, 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, SiriusXM, 360-degree Surround View Camera, and 33.3-inch by 43.4-inch panoramic sunroof and more.

As for the safety kit, FCA said that the 2019 Ram 1500 offers more than 100 safety and security features. These include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM), Brake Assist, Hill-Descent Control, and Forward Collision Warning-Plus.
