Audi has revealed the new A6 Avant based on the 5th generation A6 that was unveiled recently in March.

The new Avant measures 4.94 meters (16.2 ft) long, 1.89 meters (6.2 ft) wide and 1.47 meters (4.8 ft) high. While it retains almost all the design elements of its sedan sibling, the drag coefficient measures 0.27 Cd, just 0.03 more than the sedan.

Despite the sporty lines, the new A6 Avant retains the spacious luggage compartment capacity of its predecessor. The 565-litre capacity can be increased to 1,680 liters with the backrests folded down. Electric tailgate is standard while the hands-free is optional. There is also an optional trailer hitch with electric release function.

Rest of the vehicle is pretty much the same as the aforementioned sedan sibling. There is a 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, MMI touch response operating system which has 10.1-inch screen on top and another 8.6-inch display at the bottom, optional head-up display, optional ventilation and massage function for seats, large panoramic glass sunroof and so on.

Mild hybrid technology
The new A6 Avant is a mild hybrid as well. The belt alternator starter, the heart of the 48-volt MHEV system, recovers up to 12 kW during braking and feeds the electricity into a separate lithium-ion battery. With the engine switched off, the new Avant can coast between 55 and 160 km/h; the start-stop kicks in at 22 km/h.

The engines put their power onto the road with a 7-speed S tronic or an 8-speed tiptronic via the quattro all-wheel drive system. The optional sport differential actively distributes the power between the rear wheels when cornering at speed.

Also optional is dynamic all-wheel steering. At speeds up to 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn as much as 5 degrees in the opposite direction. This reduces the turning circle of the nearly 5-meter long Avant by up to 1 meter to 11.1 meters. At speeds above 60 km/h, the front and rear axles steer in the same direction to enhance stability.

Customers have a choice of four suspension variants – standard steel-spring suspension, sport suspension, suspension with shock absorber control and the adaptive air suspension, also with controlled shock absorbers.

Safety and assistance kit includes adaptive cruise assist and Audi pre sense systems.
