Pre-bookings open for the first member of VW ID. family

Volkswagen has christened the first member of ID. family of electric vehicles as ID.3, where the ‘3’ signifies two things – the compact segment which the vehicle belongs to, and the 3rd major chapter of strategic importance for the history of the brand after Beetle and the Golf.

Depending on the market, pre-bookings are also open for a registration deposit of €1,000. The ID.3 1st special edition, limited to 30,000 units, will offer free charging for the first year up to a maximum of 2,000 kWh – at all public charging points connected to the Volkswagen charging app We Charge, and also using the pan-European IONITY rapid charging network, in which Volkswagen is also participating.

The ID.3 1st special edition will come in four colors and three versions. All versions will feature large wheels, voice control and navigation system, while the ID.3 1st Plus with additional IQ. Light and bi-color exterior and interior design, and the ID.3 1st Max with large panoramic glass roof and augmented reality head-up display.

There’ll be three battery options available, offering ranges between 330 and up to 550 km in accordance with WLTP. The pre-booking special edition gets a medium-sized battery that is claimed to offer a range of 420 km (WLTP).

Pre-booking is being offered in 29 European markets, with Norway, Germany, Netherlands, France, UK and Austria being the most important markets. Production of the ID.3 1st is planned to start at the end of 2019 and the first vehicles are to be delivered to customers in mid-2020.

The ID.3 base model with the smallest battery version starts at under €30,000 in Germany (target price), while the ID.3 1st special edition will be available for less than €40,000, both before the deduction of the state subsidy, VW said.

“With the ID.3, we are making the electric car fit for mass mobility. Initially, we will electrify Europe with the ID.3 and then other regions with further electric models in the ID. family which are to follow in the near future,” said Jürgen Stackmann, Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen brand, responsible for Sales, Marketing and After-Sales.

Following the launch of the ID.3, additional models will roll out, such as those previewed as concept cars – ID. CROZZ, ID. VIZZION and ID. ROOMZZ, all of which will also be named with model numbers.
