Mazda’s Motorsports division has created an angry-looking version of the 2019 Mazda3 hatchback that is all set to make its racing debut at the 2020 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge at Daytona in January.

Puerto Rican driver Bryan Ortiz has been named as the first driver of the Mazda3 TCR. The designers apparently spent countless hours ensuring that the aerodynamics of the race car are compliant with all TCR regulations while retaining the clean lines of the brand’s signature Kodo – Soul of Motion design language found on the Mazda3.

The Mazda3 TCR will be powered by a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 350 hp and 490 Nm of torque, and will use a 6-speed SADEV sequential gearbox with paddle shifts (or XTRAC sequential as an option). The engine revs up to 7,000 rpm. “Developed and supported by Long Road Racing, the manufacturer of the Global Mazda MX-5 Cup car, the Mazda3 TCR is homologated to compete in any of the 36 TCR-sanctioned championships around the globe,” the company said.
