McLaren has announced the limited-edition 620R, a road-legal version of the 570S GT4 race car. Only 350 units will be built, with each car costing from £250,000 including taxes (UK). For the buyers in Europe and USA, the price includes a Pure McLaren Track Day, with expert driving tuition at a race circuit.

As for the car itself, it is built around the same single-piece carbon fibre Monocell II chassis which has contributed to a dry weight of 1,282 kg (2,826 lbs). The 620R also gets the GT4’s adjustable aerodynamic elements and race-derived suspension components. The suspension which features lightweight aluminium wishbones and uprights and stiffer anti-roll bars and springs than the ones fitted on a regular Sports Series model, is further enhanced by swapping rubber top mounts for solid stainless steel alternatives for improvements in steering control and feedback. The 620R gets the GT4’s two-way manually adjustable coilover dampers.

The adjustable carbon fibre rear wing is the same component fitted to the 570S GT4. It has been road-legalized with a newly incorporated third brake light. The dive planes at the front contribute up to 30 kg (66 lbs) of downforce as part of the 65 kg (143 lbs) delivered by the full frontal aero package. The aerodynamic elements are claimed to achieve 185 kg (408 lbs) of downforce at 250 km/h (155 mph).

The 620R rides on wheels measuring 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear, shod with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tyres as standard. Drivers can swap to the optional, full-slick motorsport tyres when they arrive on the circuit. Apparently, they’re optimised to complement the motorsport brakes and race-derived suspension of the 620R. They unlock a contact patch 8% larger than that of the road tyre, increasing lateral G-forces and enabling quicker lap times, McLaren said.

As for the brakes, the 620R gets carbon-ceramic discs measuring 390 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear, and forged aluminium brake calipers all round.

The interiors of the 620R don’t include a floor carpet or a glovebox. The air-conditioning, navigation and an audio system are also missing from the standard specification, although all can be selected at no additional cost. A lightweight Bowers & Wilkins upgraded audio system is also available, as a cost option.

A McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) system is standard and so are the super-lightweight carbon fibre racing seats with six-point racing harnesses.

The 620R is powered by the same M838TE 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in the GT4 car. However, the freedom from racing regulations has allowed the ECU and turbocharger management to be reconfigured to achieve 456 kW (620 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque at 3,500 rpm. A 7-speed seamless-shift gearbox (SSG) sends power to the rear wheels.

As for the performance figures, a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration is claimed to happen in 2.9 seconds. The top speed is 322 km/h (200 mph).

Last but not the least, buyers get a choice of three McLaren racing colours – Orange, Silica White and Onyx Black – all with GT4 race livery as standard; the Senna GTR-inspired livery also available.

First deliveries are expected in February 2020.
