The 8th gen Porsche 911 (992) lineup is now joined by the new Targa models, expected to go on sale in select markets from August 2020. The photos here showcase the 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S, both all-wheel drive models.

Just like the original Targa from 1965, the new models feature a movable roof section above the seats and a wraparound rear window. The roof can be opened or closed in about 19 seconds.

Both models are powered by a 3.0-litre (2,981 cc) twin-turbo flat-six engine, which in the Targa 4 develops 283 kW (385 hp) at 6,500 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1,950 and 5,000 rpm. The power is up by 11 kW (15 hp) compared with its predecessor.

In the Targa 4S, the flat-six develops 331 kW (450 hp), which is 22 kW (30 hp) more than its predecessor, and a maximum torque of 530 Nm (up 30 Nm) between 2,300 and 5,000 rpm. Both cars come standard with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) and Porsche Traction Management (PTM). The 4S can also be had with a 7-speed manual transmission.

Porsche said that the AWD has been optimized for better traction.

The clutch and differential unit is water-cooled and has reinforced clutch discs for greater robustness and a higher load capacity. The increased actuating torque at the clutch improves its adjustment accuracy and the function of the additional front-axle drive. Overall, the enhanced front-axle drive with PTM contributes to even better traction in all road conditions.

With the optional Sport Chrono package, the new Targa 4 is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds while the Targa 4S takes 0.6 seconds less to do the same. Top speed of the Targa 4 is 289 km/h (up 2 km/h), while the 4S can do 304 km/h (up 3 km/h).

As standard, the Targa 4 rides on alloy wheels measuring 19-inch on the front axle and 20-inch on the rear axle. The Targa 4S comes standard with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. On the Targa 4, braking duties are handled by 330 mm discs on both axles with 4-piston monobloc fixed calipers.

The Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is part of the standard equipment for the new 911 Targa models. The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), which includes an electronic rear differential lock with fully variable torque distribution, is standard for the Targa 4S and is optional on the Targa 4.

In case you’re wondering, the Targa 4 weighs 1,665 kg (3,671 lbs) dry while the 4S weighs 10 kg (22 lbs) more.
