The Toyota Prius, which became a synonym for hybrid vehicles globally, is celebrating the 20th anniversary in the U.S. market. Although the original Prius went into production in Japan in 1997, it rolled into U.S. Toyota dealerships as a 2001 model. Since 2000, Toyota has sold more than 1.9 million units in the U.S. market.

Which is why Toyota is offering Prius 2020 Editions, limited to 2,020 units. These special editions are available in a choice of Supersonic Red or the new Wind Chill Pearl, with black accents and a color-keyed rear spoiler.

The Prius 2020 Edition gets black inserts for the 17-inch alloy wheels, and blacked-out headlight components, pillars and mirror housings. The badges are also in black and as the photos would suggest, the special editions are based on the XLE FWD trim.

Inside, the Prius 2020 Edition gets ‘2020’ branded floor mats, a black shift knob, and smoked HVAC vents. These special editions will be available as 2021 models. New for 2021 is Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. This latest version of the advanced safety system includes Pre-Collision System with Low-Light Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Bicycle Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Road Sign Assist.

Other features include a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 6 speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, and an 8-way power driver’s seat.

The Prius FWD is powered by a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine (2ZR-FXE) and an electric motor. The ICE produces 71 kW (97 metric hp) at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm (105 lb-ft) of torque at 3,600 rpm, while the electric motor produces about 53 kW (72 metric hp) and 163 Nm (120 lb-ft) of torque. The system output, however, is 90 kW (122 metric hp). Transmission is an electronically controlled CVT (eCVT).

Other variants can get an on-demand AWD-e System with a 5 kW (7 metric hp) magnetless (induction) rear motor. More on that here.
