Volkswagen has fully revealed the Nivus coupe-SUV for the Latin American markets. It is the first VW model developed in Latin America, with an intention to make it big in the European markets too. It’ll be initially launched in the Brazilian market, followed by Argentina later this year and other South American markets in 2021.

As mentioned in an earlier post, the Nivus is built on the MQB platform. It measures 4,266 mm long, 1,757 mm wide, 1,493 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,566 mm. VW claims a luggage capacity of 415 litres.

The styling is pretty chic too and seems to be targeting the younger generation, also known with the fancy word “Millennials”. On the front fascia, the grille’s middle chrome line runs into the headlights — a neat touch, while at the rear, there are smoked taillights connected by a black bar.

The side profile is where these “coupe-SUVs” get really interesting with that sloping roofline which usually ends in an integrated rear spoiler. Here, the roofline doesn’t seem to be that aggressive, which is, of course, a good thing. The black spoiler and black roof rails look pretty neat.

Exterior features include LED headlights with integrated LED DRLs, LED fog lamps, 17-inch light-alloy wheels, LED taillights, and of course, the aforementioned oomph factors.

The interior layout looks very familiar and might remind you of models such as the 6th gen Polo and T-Cross. Features include a digital cockpit, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

Safety and driver assistance systems include ESC, Hill-Hold Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

As for the business end of the story, the Nivus will be powered by a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI engine with flex-fuel capability. In the 200 TSI variant, it delivers 94 kW (128 metric hp) and 200 Nm (148 lb-ft) of torque when fueled with ethanol. Transmission is a 6-speed automatic that drives the front wheels.

Initial manufacturing will happen at the Anchieta factory in São Paulo, Brazil.

First model developed in the region that will be manufactured and commercialized also in the European market, one of the world’s most competitive. — Pablo Di Si, President & CEO of Volkswagen Latin America

The Nivus is expected in Europe in the second half of 2021.
