Geely’s new 7-seater SUV Hao Yue doesn’t like new car smell

China’s Geely has revealed the brand’s biggest SUV called ‘Hao Yue’. Not entirely sure what that means but putting those two words in Google translate returns the word ‘Olympic’. An Olympic SUV? I don’t know. Anyway, just like Jia Ji and Bo Rui GE we’ve seen previously, I think it’s best we don’t scratch our heads too much about the name.

Geely says that they created the Hao Yue “to compete with foreign joint-venture brands in the Chinese market”. It’ll be available in both 5- and 7-seater configurations.

As for styling, the Hao Yue sports a typical 3-row SUV looks with Geely’s signature front grille. There are sharp looking headlights with an LED signature, muscular side profile with pronounced wheel arches, and an okay-ish rear fascia. It’s a design that neither pleases nor disappoints you. In fact, it appears that the designers are trying to please everyone by keeping things simple and old school. There is no dual lamp setup like we see in SUVs these days and no polarizing design elements like we saw in the new Santa Fe, for example.

While the exterior design looks boring, the Hao Yue’s interior looks fairly contemporary and stylish. In fact, the interior design looks as if it belongs to a different vehicle altogether. It has got an attractive layout with what appears to be brushed aluminium accents/frame around the air vents; notice that the same shape has been sort of replicated on the centre console.

Technologies inside include a 12.3-inch central infotainment display, a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument cluster, an advanced Head-Up display, and driver assistance technologies with Level 2 capabilities that’ll allow the SUV to automatically follow, stop, as well as turn at speeds up to 150 km/h (93 mph).

Geely claims that the materials used in the Hao Yue’s interior underwent stringent environmental testing with requirements over 20 times higher than Chinese national standards. The result is a cabin without the “harmful new car smell”, the company said. The SUV also features PM2.5 filter.

Powering the new Geely Hao Yue is a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, developing 135 kW (184 hp) at 5500 rpm and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque between 1750-4000 rpm. The engine is paired with a 7-speed DCT that drives the front wheels.

Now, going back to the name, does it mean “How are You?” Let me know in the comments.
