Jeep Wagoneer returns as a PHEV concept with cabin full of displays

2020-Grand-Wagoneer-Concept

The original Jeep Wagoneer was the American equivalent of the full-size Range Rover. It saw a production run of nearly 3 decades with the last one being the Grand Wagoneer ZJ in 1993. The following year, it was replaced with the Grand Cherokee. Anyway, the Wagoneer is being revived now, because you know, the world needs more SUVs for reasons beyond our understanding. And yes, there’ll be Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

Jeep classifies the new Grand Wagoneer we’re seeing here as a “concept”, although it almost looks like it is ready to roll off the production line. In terms of the styling, it does look like an evolved version of the original Wagoneer with its long bonnet, squared-off front fascia and overall boxy looks. The concept has a continuous LED strip that connects the LED projector headlights, however, at the rear, the light strip is broken into two parts for some reason. The front doors feature the “Grand Wagoneer” wordmark in aluminum followed by the American flag. Also, notice the tow hooks at the front. The dual-tone paint scheme creates a clean-looking floating roof effect.

Rounding off the Grand Wagoneer concept’s exterior looks are the massive, 24-inch Obsidian-finished aluminum wheels featuring 3D-printed elements and a wheel cap with a Wagoneer logo.

Inside, the space shouldn’t be a problem and so is the “airiness” as there’s a massive, full-pane glass roof. Fit and finish appears to be solid and the usage of materials such as leather, Dinamica microfibre, wood, onyx glass and aluminum accents add a touch of premiumness. The floor carpeting is made of recycled materials.

More than any of that, what grabs all the attention are those displays everywhere; there are more displays than you’d need. These include a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.1-inch central touchscreen and another 10.25-inch display underneath for comfort settings; a 10.25-inch front passenger screen, two 10.1-inch entertainment touchscreens for the rear passengers, and of course, another 10.1-inch screen housed on the center console between the two captain’s chairs. Feature list also includes 4-zone climate control and a 23-speaker McIntosh audio system.

As for the technical bits, Jeep says that the Grand Wagoneer concept is a plug-in hybrid vehicle with 4×4 capability. Production of the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is expected to begin next year and will go on sale as a 2022 model.
