Fiat has revealed the updated Tipo lineup that now includes a ‘Cross’ variant. The updates include subtle styling tweaks, new technology and revised powertrains.
As mentioned, the styling tweaks are rather subtle, with new full-LED headlights and a new Fiat logo with large FIAT lettering — similar to the one on the back of the new 500. The side profile remains unchanged and so is the rear-end. However, there’s a new LED taillight signature. Also, there are new 16- or 17-inch alloy wheel designs.
Tipo Cross hatchback
The ‘Cross’ variant sports a butch look and rides about 4 cm higher than its other siblings in the lineup. The front & rear skid plate-like inserts and the side skirt attachments appear robust, and apparently, the roof rails are functional as well.
The refreshed cabin features a 7-inch TFT driver display, a 10.25-inch UConnect 5 touchscreen (7-inch standard), wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, and a USB port for the rear seats. Safety and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) include Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assist, Lane Control, Attention Assist, Adaptive High Beam, and Blind Spot Assist.
Moving on to the business end of the story, at launch, the new Tipo comes with a FireFly 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that offers 100 metric hp (74 kW) and 190 Nm (140 lb-ft) of torque, which is a respectable upgrade over the outgoing 1.4L’s 95 hp and 127 Nm (94 lb-ft). Fiat says that the gearbox (5-MT) has been calibrated to ensure maximum response in the city traffic and best comfort on the highway, stopping the engine revving any higher than 3,200 rpm at a cruising speed of 130 km/h (81 mph).
As for diesel powertrains, there’ll be a 95 hp 1.3L Multijet unit paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 130 hp 1.6L Multijet paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox; the 1.6L now offers 10 hp more.
Prices in Italy start at €13,900.
