Mitsubishi has revealed the 4th generation Outlander SUV, scheduled to go on sale first in North America in April 2021 as a 2022 model, with other global markets to follow at a later date. MSRP in the U.S. starts at $25,795. According to Mitsubishi, the new Outlander is built around the concept of ‘I-Fu-Do-Do’, meaning authentic and majestic in Japanese.

The new Outlander is Mitsubishi’s version of the 3rd generation Nissan Rogue. However, its design comes from the Engelberg Tourer concept we saw in 2019, which is indeed authentic and looks intimidating with that ‘Dynamic Shield’ front fascia. As for the dimensions, the new model is slightly bigger compared to the outgoing one; it measures 4,710 mm long (+16 mm), 1,862 mm wide (+51 mm) and 1,748 mm tall (+38 mm). It boasts a wheelbase of 2,705 mm, which is about 35 mm more compared to the previous model.

Exterior equipment includes LED headlights with three vertically arranged lights (two low beams at the top and a high beam at the bottom), front fog lights, 20-inch wheels, LED taillight signature, and a panoramic sunroof. For the U.S. market, the Outlander offers a total of 8 exterior colors: Red Diamond, White Diamond, Black Diamond, Sterling Silver, Titanium Gray, Black, Cosmic Blue and Deep Bronze.

The cabin design too is the production-ized version of the Engelberg concept; the black panel with horizontal lines creates an illusion of a continuous air vent. Features include an 8-way power-adjustable driver seat, semi-aniline leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch digital driver display (optional), a 10.8-inch full-color Head-Up Display, 9-inch central display, Android Auto & wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity, wireless smartphone charging (optional), USB-A and USB-C charging ports, 3-zone climate control, and a 10-speaker Bose audio system.

Passive safety includes a total of 11 airbags. Active safety and driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Trailer Stability Assist, Forward Collision Mitigation system, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, Active Blind Spot Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Automatic Emergency Brake, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Multiview Camera System, and many more. As for suspension improvements, aluminum is used for the front and rear knuckles and also for front lower arms and rear upper arms. Mitsubishi claims that the roll angle during cornering is decreased by 14% compared to the previous model, thanks to hollow stabilizers that cut down weight and increased bar diameter that improves roll rigidity. Also, the overall suspension rigidity is increased by 17% for toe and 5% for camber at the front, and by 40% for toe and 14% for camber at the rear, the company said.

Brake disc diameter is also up, measuring 13.8-inch at the front and 13.0-inch at the rear as opposed to 11.7- and 11.9-inch in the previous model, respectively.

At launch, the new Outlander will be available only with a petrol engine, which is also shared with the Rogue. The 2.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated unit develops the same 135 kW (184 metric hp) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is paired with a CVT that offers 8 simulated shifts. There’ll also be S-AWC models (AWD).
