A real gearbox finally finds its path

Nissan has revealed the 5th generation Pathfinder, scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. market in summer 2021 as a 2022 model. The new Pathfinder will be available in S, SV, SL and Platinum trims and in two packages — SV Premium and SL Premium.

The SUV manages to retain more or less the same footprint as the outgoing model, however, there are some differences. It now measures 5,004 mm long (-41 mm), 1,978 mm wide (+17 mm) and 1,778 mm tall (+10 mm). Its wheelbase of 2,900 mm is the same as the 4th gen Pathfinder. The new model’s boxy styling emphasizes the additional width and height and makes the vehicle look like a full-size SUV from many angles. Notice the bold PATHFINDER badging on the boxy tailgate. Also, the partially blacked-out c-pillar kinda looks cool.

Exterior features include LED headlights with integrated running lights; LED taillights, panoramic moonroof, and up to 20-inch alloy wheels (18-inch standard). Buyers will get to choose from 14 exterior colors/color combinations, including five new two-tone finishes.

The new Pathfinder comes with a standard 8-seater configuration with bench seats, or for the first time, optional captain seats for the 2nd row. The 2nd-row bench seat now comes with EZ FLEX one-touch release with push-button activation to make life easy for elderly and backseat passengers alike. Features list includes a 12.3-inch driver display, 10.8-inch Head-up Display, 9.0-inch central touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity.

Options list includes a 10-way power driver’s seat, climate-controlled front seats, tri-zone climate control with 2nd-row climate control, heated rear seats, wireless smartphone charging pad, wireless Apple CarPlay, and 13-speaker Bose Premium Audio. The SV and SL trims get Nissan’s ProPILOT Assist, which is Nissan’s branding for Adaptive Cruise Control.

Every 2022 Pathfinder comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard, which includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Assist and Rear Automatic Braking. Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Driver Alertness and Rear Door Alert are also standard, while Blind Spot Intervention, Intelligent Lane Intervention and Traffic Sign Recognition are optional. Passive safety includes 10 standard airbags.

Moving on to the powertrain section, the 2022 Pathfinder is powered by the same 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with the same 212 kW (288 metric hp) and 351 Nm (259 lb-ft) of torque as the outgoing model. The biggest change is, of course, introducing the real gearbox. The CVT has been replaced with a new 9-speed automatic gearbox with manual mode and paddle shifters. The AWD models get a 7-position Drive and Terrain Mode Selector.

A 6,000 lbs (2,721.5 kg) towing capacity is optional (3,500 lbs standard), while the Trailer Sway Control function is standard.
