Yamaha YZF-R7 debuts as a next-gen compact supersport

Yamaha has finally revealed the new YZF-R7, which unlike the original YZF-R7 of the late ’90s, is NOT a limited edition model built only to gain homologation for World Superbike and Suzuka 8 Hours. Yamaha is happy to build more than 500 units or as many as the people want. In fact, the new YZF-R7 can be considered a successor to the YZF-R6 as Yamaha has announced the discontinuation of the latter. The R7 has big shoes to fill, indeed. Prices in the U.S. start at $8,999.

The new YZF-R7 has a slim body to cut through the air as efficiently as possible. The front fascia features a YZR-M1 MotoGP bike-inspired M-shaped air intake, flanked by small intakes with an integrated LED position light. A single LED headlight is recessed within the aforementioned M-shaped air intake. Buyers can choose between ‘Team Yamaha Blue’ and ‘Performance Black’ paint finishes.

The motorcycle measures 81.5-inches long, 27.8-inches wide and 45.7-inches tall, with a wheelbase of 54.9-inches.

Other features include a full-LCD instrument display, KYB 41 mm front fork (preload, rebound and compression adjustable), link-type Monocross rear suspension (preload and rebound adjustable), Assist & Slipper (A&S) clutch, and 10-spoke 17-inch cast alloy wheels shod with Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport tyres (120/70 front and 180/55 rear). Braking duties are handled by twin 298 mm discs at the front and a single 245 mm disc at the rear.

The YZF-R7 is powered by a 689 cc liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, inline twin-cylinder engine, featuring a 270-degree crankshaft that gives an uneven firing sequence. The engine pumps out a maximum output of 54 kW (73.5 metric hp) at 8,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 67 Nm (49.5 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. The engine is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The motorcycle claims a wet weight of 188 kg (414 lbs).

Buyers can go for a Quick Shift System (QSS), which will be a dealer-installed option.

This simple but effective QSS features a switch positioned on the gear shift rod, and when any upshifting movement is detected, the ECU instantaneously cuts power to the transmission for a few milliseconds, allowing for faster and smoother full-throttle upshifts for even more exhilarating acceleration.
