When the Porsche Taycan debuted just over two years ago, I’m pretty sure nobody had imagined that it would one day outsell an iconic nameplate such as the 911, but that’s exactly what happened in the first three quarters of 2021 (Jan-Sep). Porsche delivered a total of 217,198 vehicles worldwide, an increase of 13% over the same period last year. Of that total, the Taycan accounted for 28,640 units—compared to 27,972 units of the 911. That said, the 911 deliveries saw a growth of 10%.

As always, the Cayenne led the sales with 62,451 units delivered, closely followed by the Macan with 61,944 units—a 12% increase. The Panamera deliveries accounted for 20,275 units, followed by the 718 (Boxster and Cayman) models with 15,916 units; both registering a 1% growth over the previous year.

As for the regional sales, the U.S. market recorded a 30% growth, followed by the Asia-Pacific, Africa and Middle East markets with a 12% growth. As you can see in the list above, Porsche recorded a positive number in all markets.

Despite delivering a record number of vehicles and registering positive growth, Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing, said that the company is facing challenges in sourcing semiconductors like all other carmakers out there. “The order books are nicely filled and are, in turn, filling us with optimism and enthusiasm as we approach the year-end rush. However, the coronavirus situation remains dynamic and we are facing challenges in sourcing semiconductors. For these reasons, we are keeping a very close eye on current developments to ensure that we can continue to react in a flexible manner,” said von Platen.
