2022-Mazda-Carol

Mazda has launched the new Carol in Japan, with prices starting at JPY 998,800 (US$ 8,678). The kei car is supplied by Mazda’s good friend Suzuki which sells it as a 9th gen Alto. The Carol is available with regular gasoline and gasoline mild-hybrid powertrains, with FWD and AWD options.

The new Carol is a literal rebadge and looks identical to Suzuki Alto. Features depending on the trim include LED headlights, 14-inch aluminium wheels, keyless entry, push-button start/stop, auto AC, heated front seats and adjustable rear headrests. Active safety systems include dual camera brake support, false start suppression (when there’s an obstacle at the front or rear), brake support when reversing, lane departure warning, and auto high beam assist.

It’s only the GL grade that is available with a regular gasoline engine which is a 658 cc 3-cylinder unit that develops 34 kW (46.2 metric hp) and 55 Nm (40.5 lb-ft) of torque. The GS and GX grades are mild-hybrid variants, combining a 657 cc 3-cylinder gasoline engine with an ISG. The ICE pumps out 36 kW (49 metric hp) and 58 Nm (42.8 lb-ft) of torque, while the electric motor develops 1.9 kW (2.5 metric hp) and 40 Nm (29.5 lb-ft) of torque. Transmission in both powertrains is a CVT, and GL and GS grades offer AWD options.
