As some of you may know, I live in Bengaluru, a large metropolis. Just a few months ago, even here, it was rare to see a Suzuki Jimny, while you’ll find at least two Thars parked on every road. But that is changing, the number of Jimnys is slowly increasing, and the latest client is the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). As the name suggests, the personnel at ITBP are responsible for guarding India’s border with Tibet.
The 5-door Jimny replaces the Gypsy, also known as SJ30 Jimny globally. 60 of these vehicles will be deployed along the border regions of Leh-Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. The 5-door Jimny was launched in India in mid-2023. This variant is manufactured in India not just for the local market, but also for markets around the world, including Japan. In India, the 5-door Jimny is available in just two variants: Zeta and Alpha, but the best part is, of course, both come with four-wheel-drive as standard, and both offer the option of a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed torque converter automatic. From the above photos, we can infer that the ITBP has got Zeta variants, but we can’t tell if these are manual or automatic.
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has been a trusted companion for the Armed Forces for decades, and now with the Jimny, we take ahead this legacy to support our soldiers at the frontiers. With its internationally acclaimed all-terrain capability, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny represents our commitment to go above and beyond to assist the heroes who protect our great nation. – Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited
The ITBP operates in some of the most challenging terrains in India, including the Himalayan regions with extreme weather conditions and temperatures dropping to as low as -45 degrees Celsius in winter. Their areas of operation encompass glaciers, snow-covered mountains and rugged landscapes. Such remote and often inaccessible locations demand abuse-friendly vehicles, and I think the force made the right choice for the job.
